The one born in Hexham Joined up in November 1913 but was discharged as "Unlikely to become an efficient soldier" in January 1914. The reason being that he had deformed ankles. On his attestation papers he gives his occupation as a gardener. |

Which ever (If either) age for John is accurate then he was younger than his bride. It was certainly not unknown for either party of a marriage to "Adjust" their age to suit the circumstances. In this case I think it possible that John may have reduced his true age so that the age gap looked less. As his wife registered his death I would be inclined to think that that shown on his death certificate was likely to be the correct one. |
