Hi Shirley , Thanks will try Settle , must be a typo on Elizabeth Wilshaw ..Wiltshaw !! Strange move to Yorkshire to marry, from the Red Rose oooo to the White Rose county !! across the border ...we need passports to get into Yorkshire from Lancashire ha ha !! LancsBMD children of William Batty & Elizabeth record Wilshaw for mother ( Lancashire BMD great as most births show mother's ms ) also her parents are Wilshaws for defo . Thanks again . C xx :-D

Lets do an example lookup at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Here I searched for all types of record thru 1851 with surname Wil*sh?w (The wildcard * stands for any string of characters of length 0 or more; the wilcard ? stands for a single character)
Deaths Dec 1839 (>99%) Wilshaw William Lancaster 21 359
Births Sep 1843 (>99%) WILLSHOW Jane Lancaster 21 465
Marriages Dec 1843 (>99%) WILSHAW James Lancaster 21 375
Deaths Jun 1844 (>99%) Wilshaw Jane Lancaster 21 304
Births Sep 1845 (>99%) WILLSHAW William Lancaster 21 525
Births Jun 1848 (>99%) Wilshaw Ellen Lancaster 21 545
Deaths Sep 1848 (>99%) Wilshaw Ellen Lancaster 21 307 Wilshaw Ruth Lancaster 21 307
I believe Jane b 1843q3 d 1844q2 and William b 1843q3 are your Eliz's sibs.
Now lets look at the marr of James 1843q4. If I click on the "Lancaster" link, then the more info "here" link, I see a list of the villages (incl Melling & Scotforth) in Lancaster RD. If I click on the page # "375" link, I see a list of the names on that page. Obviously, this should include James an his spouse, but one doesn't normally know which spouse is his.
Marriages Dec 1843 (>99%) Balderstone Anthony Lancaster 21 375 BINGHAM William Lancaster 21 375 Cornthwaite Ruth Lancaster 21 375 ECCLES Eleanor Lancaster 21 375 Forster William Wigan 21 375 Mason William Lancaster 21 375 Norman Nancy Lancaster 21 375 WILLIAMSON Hannah Lancaster 21 375 WILSHAW James Lancaster 21 375
At this time there were 4 marrs per page (they later cut it down to the modern 2). One can see a stray Wiganer above - his page # is really 575 (the correction has been made, but FreeBMD often seems to retain the old mistranscription).
At this point, one would often be stuck and have to resort to trying to spot James with Ruth on a later census. However, some local ROs have their own index online, including most of Lancs & Durham. Check
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
Here we want http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Now we know James wed in Melling, we can check http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html
Marriage: 29 Nov 1843 St Wilfrid, Melling in Lonsdale, Lancashire, England James Wilshaw - of full age Coachman Bachelor of Manchester Ruth Cornthwaite - of full age Spinster of Wray Groom's Father: John Wilshaw, Farmer Bride's Father: William Cornthwaite, Farmer Witness: George Grime; Elizabeth Wildman; John Calverley Married by Licence by: Elisha White, Incumbent of Wray Register: Marriages 1837 - 1920, Page 38, Entry 75 Source: LDS Film 1849660
It looks like James isn't Eliz's bro, as I think her parents were William & Margaret Wilshaw MS Moore.

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1864 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference BATTY Robert Darwen Blackburn WILSHAW D/40/22
All these births are in the Lancaster sub-rego district of Lancaster RD (check the 1851 census). Lancaster RD is now part of Lancashire RD, whose rego's are now held in Preston.
There are no deaths for Martha thru 1861, either on LancsBMD or FreeBMD
I don't have an Ancestry sub, so maybe someone could post the family in 1861, and (if I've got it right) Martha with her grandparents in 1861.
It would be useful to know the granparents' pob, and the pob of her uncle William. I think you'll need to go back to 1851 for that. I'm hoping it will slot in with my last post.

Hi all who have replied ,
1861 census for my Wilshaws plus Martha Batty granddaughter .
132 Chequers Clayton Le Moors Lancashire
Martha Batty b 14/10/1854 Scotforth Lancaster living there with her grandparents : William Wilshaw and Margaret ms Moore .
William Wilshaw b1804 Burton in Kendal Westmorland Margaret Moore bc 1803 Ingleton Yorkshire
4 of their children still living with them Alice Wilshaw bc 1835 Ingleton Yorkshire Thomas Wilshaw bc1842 Ingleton Yorkshire William Wilshaw bc 1849 Ingleton Yorkshire Margaret Wilshaw bc1849 Bentham Yorkshire plus Martha Batty granddaughter b 1854 Scotforth Lancaster .
RG9/3090
Martha Batty 1854 one of 11 Batty children . Births of Batty children LancashireBMD
William Batty bc1824 Burton Yorkshire , Elizabeth Wilshaw b1827 c 06/05/1827 Burton in Kendal. The 1849 Settle marriage could be the correct one for William Batty Elizabeth Wilshaw .
I have Martha Batty's marriage no problems with that . My original query was for marriage for William Batty Elizabeth Wilshaw.
Thanks again everyone . C XX :-D

Catherine - is your post correct re William Wilshaw bc 1849 Ingleton Yorkshire
I was expecting 1845 in Lancs, preferably near Lancaster or maybe in Lunesdale? This would help confirm the MS=Moore guess.
Anyway, the important entry is Margaret Wilshaw bc1849 Bentham Yorkshire
Presumably this lass: Births Mar 1849 (>99%) Wilshaw Margaret Jane Settle 23 597
So we know Eliz's parents were in Bentham in 1849 and Bentham (& Ingleton) are in Settle RD. It's quite reasonable to expect Eliz to get wed from her parents' house.
