Just to clarify
Several Nz Electoral rolls give Dora Rosella and RIchard Henry, FARMER at 12 Russell Road , later Richard retired with Marjorie at 1, Russell Road, I cant see any other children .

Thanks girls, you've been a great help!

Much appreciated, Karen

The only Richard Henry birth is 1871! Barring some mistranscription ... and he wasn't the father of our Richard H, one way or another.

If this one is our boy

Births Dec 1893
Maddern Richard Penzance 5c 242

who is the Richard H in 1911 it seems, it looks like he just got assigned a middle name later. ;-)

But that age just doesn't match the Richard Henry death in NZ.

Marriage certificate needed! for age, full name and father's name.

I'm pretty sure he;s Richard Henry not Hitchens, of course the marriage cert would soon sort that out Karen.

The Richard born in Paul is the one whose WWI records are at Ancestry. He had a wife and child.

Marriages Jun 1903
Caddy Ellen Kneebone Penzance 5c 440
Maddern Richard Penzance 5c 440

So I'm confused!

Dora's passage:

MADDREN D R 1892 1919 Bristol New Zealand Wellington

But no Richard ... ?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jun 2011 01:53

This is the one who would match that age

1891

Name: Richard Maddern
Age: 9
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Relation: Son
Father's name: William Maddern
Mother's name: Mary Maddern
Where born: Newlyn Paul, Cornwall, England

Civil parish: Paul
Registration district: Penzance
County/Island: Cornwall

William Maddern 56
Mary Maddern 56
Louisa Maddern 27
Asenath Maddern 23
Jane Maddern 19
William Maddern 21
Susan Maddern 13
Richard Maddern 9

unless I'm doing the math as badly as I did for that age-in-WWI comment ...

There's only one birth to match

Births Jun 1880
MADDERN Richard Penzance 5c 285

but this is him in 1881:

William Maddern 26
Selina Maddern 26
John Maddern 4
William Maddern 3
Richard Maddern 1

New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981 about Richard Henry Maddren
Name: Richard Henry Maddren
Electoral Year: 1949
District: Marsden
Region or Province: Northland

On this one there is Marjorie Mary Maddren spinster at the same address with Richard ? She must be old enough to vote ?

Not much help shes still a spinster in 1978 !

There;s one born 1922 on search trees ?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jun 2011 01:47

I've kept getting switched to new search today too, and Glitter Baby mentioned it on Genealogy Chat. Trying to find how to get switched back is genuinely ... Madderning.

;-)

Ah -- there was a death for a Richard Henry.

1968/48507 Maddren Richard Henry 87Y

But that age is out -- 1880ish.

Maybe we all have the wrong Richard H after all?!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jun 2011 01:27

Or Maddren! As you found, that's how that death is shown.

I couldn't find a death for Richard under either spelling.

Lindsey* Report 12 Jun 2011 01:20

I'm ahead of myself.!!! next I think you should go through search trees and contact more recent Madderns in NZ you might strike gold ?

I'm not sure if NZ death certs like Aus. ones give childrens details too.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jun 2011 01:12

Lindsey knows the answer to where to find -- but she didn't give a link !!

https://www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz/

You'll want to hunt for yourself?

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/

But like here in Canada:

The historic data available for you to search is limited so that information relating to people who might still be alive, can be protected. Information available includes:

Births that occurred at least 100 years ago
Stillbirths that occurred at least 50 years ago
Marriages that occurred at least 80 years ago
Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago.

Lindsey...thank you.. so ahead of me...hehe :)

Yes, that looks to be correct. Dora's birth is registered with the middle name Rose, but the 1911 census does say Rosella.

There are these records in WWI medals at Ancestry:

R Maddern [Richard Maddern] Royal Engineers, Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry 132277, 21825

Richard Maddern Royal Engineers, Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry, 95th TR Bn, Royal Engineers 260210, 26313, TR/12144, WR/28999

Richard Maddern Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry 22151

Richard Maddern Royal Army Medical Corps 33968

Richard H Maddern Devon Rt, 9/Devon Rt 45632, 45632

The only one for whom there is a service record is the first one, 26313. He was 35 yrs old when he enrolled. - edit - that's the second one.

Born 1893 would have been a little young to be in WWI?

... Duh. I left out a decade.

Sliwowski

Sliwowski Report 12 Jun 2011 01:08

Yes, Janey. I was indeed thinking the same thing, just slower! Too late for me at this time of night to think too quickly. I did also notice that there is a place in Cornwall or district called Madron. Perhaps there is also a link there?! However, although I'd like a little background on Richard I'd also like to trace them forward if it is possible. I've never had to do any NZ research and don't know if they've kept traceable records etc.

Any pointers or links to threads on New Zealand research would be useful please?

Thank you girls, K

Quite likely the aunt was Mary Jane Hitchens Maddern's aunt, just recorded as the head of household's aunt for convenience. "Aunt-in-law". ;-)

You have noted the spelling of the name -- MaddERn, rather than MaddREn as in your opening post.

Thank you Lindsey.

Those results are making me wonder if it was WW1 that brought Richard to outer London. He would have been the right age to have served, I guess. Hmm...

That his father's aunt was a Hitchens is interesting aswell. I was thinking Hitchens would be his mother's maiden name. Food for thought...

Thanks again, K
