I have a James Sykes born in Halifax West yorkshire ,who married Mary Cooper in 1817.James was from the Elland ,Rastrick area of Halifax. However ,I have found 2 James from that area. One born in 1792 and one in 1790.Think I need to find out what age James was when he married Mary Cooper.They got married at St Johns in Halifax.
Thanks

In the 1841 Census a policy of rounding down ages was in place.

* As such people aged:
* 15-19 were recorded as 15;
* 20-24 were recorded as 20;
* 25-29 were recorded as 25;
* 30-34 were recorded as 30;
* 35-39 were recorded as 35;

Going by the marriage date that Lynski found and his birth year on the 1841...I make it 31 years old when he married.
What do you think?

The James I found in 1841 with Mary and family ...it states he was born 1786.

Please can I ask how you know they were born in either 1790/1792?

Lynski Report 14 Jun 2011 22:38

You have to remember that ages and places of birth can change from census to census - some just put the place they were living in as their place of birth and ages could be +/- 2-5 years?

There is also the rounding down policy in the 1841 census.

Francesca

Francesca Report 14 Jun 2011 22:40

OK thanks Vera. Am more confused now then.
