Since Mary Freebody was a widow, to trace her back you'll need her MS=maiden surname.
The obvious first guesses are via:
Witness- James Aylward?Jane Vicholson?
although Nicholson seems more likely than Vicholson.

You will often find the same man/men being the witnesses on the majority of marrs in that year, i.e., a professional witness often the parish clerk or some mate of his. Rellies of the couple often were shy of admitting they couldn't sign their own name. Siblings were often witnesses.

The other obvious choice for Mary's MS is Bush.
(My gran remarried as a widow and 2 of her subsequent kids got her MS as their mid name.)

Lol Middy, that's the best thing about seeing original registers, you can find all sorts of snippets!.
Was good of the LMA to work in with Ancestry, although mistranscriptions are rife amongst the parishes, but with patience and effort, you can usually get results, although they aren't complete.

Funnily enough, I saw the back of my head again last night, on an old WDYTYA programme, I was there when Patsy Kensit was being filmed lol!.

Hi Chris

I think he was, a good family to marry into the Coutts.

It appears that my Great x 4 Grandad was killed under the wheels of his carriage, and from the newspaper article Sir Francis Burdett said that he would provide for his one remaining son aged 12 (Thomas Bush French), if it hadn't said about it on the burial record that something had happened and mentioned Sir Francis Burdett's name I would have been none the wiser

Hi Ann

I have Samuel's death certificate and confirms that his occupation was stone sawyer if that helps and he passed in 1840.

Hi Chris

Thanks for the information - he is definitely related he is Samuel and his siblings dad, I have some paperwork on his which a relative I found on Ancestry has kindly provided me with.

Apparently it was a big story at the time it happened.

Thanks

Hi DetEcTive

Thanks for the advice - I will have a look for Wills on Ancestry as well.

Many Thanks

You could search for Wills on the National Archive site - there is no guarantee that any of the French family were wealthy enough to bother (or that the Will survived). But there may be leads.

Ditto for Military/Naval records, or Chelsea Pensioners (CP's are on FMP)

Hi Ellen

Thanks for saying that but I feel I was being a bit unfair it isn't like it is just one person, it just seems to get so hard when you go back further the clues seem to dry up.

I had a little look for Thomas Bush French and did find a baptism for a child he had (thank god for such an unusual middle name), appears that he was married to a lady called Ann and their child born 1813 was Mary Ann.

Thanks again :-D

Middy,

You have the batisms, so you have their parents names and possibly their fathers occupation?? or am I not understanding your question (which is not too hard for me!)

There are lots of records online, two good ones of which Ellen has posted.

What dates and area are you searching, if you post the names there may be someone on here that can kickstart you again.
