Looked on the National Archives "J77" but nothing showing. Divorce was very expensive in those years and bigamy was not uncommon. Might be worth getting the certificate.

Thanks for that Teresa. If that is my Lina (which seems reasonable), she and my grandfather presumably had divorced - or do we have a sniff of bigamy here!!!. Is there any way we can look up divorce records do you know?

My grandfather stated he was a widower when he married my grandmother. Don't you just love these mysteries!

Yup, my grandparents finally married in 1941, by which time my late Dad was 20. He and his sister never knew anything about the first marriage, and will never realise that their parents didn't marry until 1941 - obviously the event was kept very quiet. We're wondering if my grandfather had to wait for Lina to die to marry again (being Italian and Catholic, no chance of divorce I guess), or whether it was due to the war and him being an "alien", in order to avoid some sort of internment. Finding out when Lina actually died would give a bit of a clue. It's difficult delving into Italian records.

The first marriage of course raises the question of whether there are any other offspring out there that we know nothing about!

did your Grandfather have children with his 2nd wife prior to his marriage?

I see possible children from 1918 onwards.

If this is the case then maybe Lena did return to her home country and therefore the reason for such a later marriage to your Grandmother??

She was my grandfather's first wife - didn't know until recently that he had been married before - so interested to know what happened to her, and possibly if they had any children. His marriage certificate to my grandmother shows him as "widowed".
