FRANK HINDLE DANIEL -A family story....

My grandfather Frank Hindle Daniel born1886 in Manchester only had one leg. Apparently as a baby he was taken out in his pram somewhere near to Manchester City's former home of Maine Road in Moss Side, Manchester. He was taken out of his pram to crawl round and one leg was cut. The wound was infected and became gangrenous and his left leg was amputated above the knee.
The family story is this...... As an adult he was a pedler selling mob caps that he had made from door to door. One day he found himself outside the door of the surgeon who had amputated his leg. He obviously must have known the surgeons name. He knocked on the door and introduced himself. He was invited inside and the surgeon apparently now famous and knighted showed my grandfather his leg in a jar. It had been his first amputation and he had kept the leg !
I would be interested to find out the name of this surgeon and if there are any records of this.
Does anyone out there know if there is any way that I can find this information ?

Yes Ive got that. Ive got all sorts of records plus a few photos showing him with one leg but I'd love to find out if the tale of the leg in the jar is true.
