James Valentine Phillips b.13/08/1889. Parents David Richard Phillips and Elizabeth Ann Phillips. In 1891 he was with his family at Eastfield Street, Tower Hamlets. In 1901 he seems to be in a boys 'institution' in St. Pancras. Can anyone help me to find out where he was in 1911? And does anyone know if I can find out why he was in the 'institution' when all his siblings were at home? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Kathy.

Phillips was a very popular name in 1911!!!
I've looked through all and agree with Lynski that this is the closest match, despite David Richard being listed as Richard...

How do you know that this is your James Valentine????

Lynski

Lynski Report 24 Jun 2011 01:36

I cannot find a birth record for your James Valentine Phillips born in 1889.

Where has your information come from?

There is one James Valentine Phillips ( but his parents are Thomas and Christianna (in 1901 census living in Gateshead, Durham).

I've been looking at the 1901 aswell - and I'm not fully convinced it's THE James Phillips, he's only 10 and there's no specific birthplace for him, it's a bit vague.
He may have been with grandparents or in hospital? Am looking but there's a ton of Phillips'.

Thank you all SO much. Lynski, your mind worked the same as mine so this a.m. I looked for a marriage and found it. The reason I thought it may have been James in the 'institution' was because when my grand-mother talked to my dad about 'Uncle Jimmy' when I was a child it was always with a 'lovable rogue' sort of attitude!
Glitter Baby, thank you. You've got the lot who were still at home in 1911. You've also answered a silent question, again from childhood, why did my gran ALWAYS refer to Aunt Maryann and not just Aunt Mary. Now I know. And you found the same birth record I did for James Valentine.
Karen in the desert, I WASN'T sure about James having been a 'naughty boy' but see above. You have, however, put into my mind the idea of checking the 1901 census for James' grandparents in case I'm misjudging him!! And to all of you, my great-grandfather seems to have changed David and Richard around at will, possibly to avoid confusion with his son of the same name.
Thank you all again. Warmest wishes, Kathy.
