There is this family in the 1911 census with a married Elizabeth Dowson born Wolsingham staying with them. She is sister-in-law to the head of household (possibly Joseph Dowson's wife):-

I see Joseph's wife is not on the 1911 census!
That could explain the "affair" with the housekeeper :-)

Also Ethel is there, so the 1891 census must be correct!

Probably right, Holly!

She had a child b1915 called Ernest Whitfield Herring, who changed his name to Dowson in 1938. She was a servant 1901 at a farmer called Dowson, who's probably the father!

But no sign who her parents can be.
