where was John Evans Born

David Report 24 Jun 2011 22:53

My grandmother Florence Evans born 1903 in Bishop Aukland had an uncle John born about 1875,
We can find him on 1881 census at craddock st, Spennymoor and it says born South Staffs.
we can find him on 1891 at byers green bishop Aukland and it says born 1876 at coseley south staffs
we can find him on 1901 census at Old Park Bishop Auckland and it says born Staffordshire
in 1906 he married a Ruth Peacock Daynes
on the 1911 we can find him with Ruth, but it says John was born at Thornaby in north Yorkshire, but we have not been able to establish his birth place, so far we have ordered 4 birth certs his father is john,
we odered a Birth certificate for a john evans born in dudley 1875 Dec 06C 75, only to find this one was born to a David Evans
We ordered another certificate for a john evans born in 1872 in Tipton but it was again the wrong father. Both certs where ordered on the evidence of the census details.
since then we have ordered another for a john evans born in Bishop Auckland But again the wrong Father,
after finding the evidence on the 1911 census that said he was born in Thornaby we have ordered a birth cert that has the correct father but cannot establish this as the correct birth, it shows his mother to be a Frances Evans formaly Fite, His father John married Jane clark in may 1877 at Spennmoor, so this last birth cert cant be the John that we are looking for.

are we missing a trick or is this one of those unsolvable problems?

At the risk of sounding a bit thick, how do you know the John Evans who married Ruth is the same as Florence's uncle?

If John's father married Jane in 1877, this was after the birth of the oldest children from the 1891 census that I posted.
Is this correct?

Thanks brummiejan, its is the same John, his sister mary is witness on the marriage certificate,

Rose, where did you get the name clark from, Jane Evans was married to a Thomas Clark so John could be John Clark, but on John's marriage certificate he has put John Evans down as his father, there is an Elizabeth and a Mary clark from Jane's previous marriage.
will have to look at the sept 1874 Birth and buy another certificate

As John was born before his Mother married John Evans, he would be given his Mother's surname at his birth on the birth certificate, so he would be registered at birth as John Clark.
Just because he was brought up with his Mother married to John Evans and probably regarded John as his Father, does not mean that the birth certificate recorded this fact, as it was not back-dated but recorded facts at the time.
As Rose said, you should be looking for a John Clark.

patchem Report 25 Jun 2011 08:17

You have said there are Elizabeth and Mary Clark from the previous marriage. In the 1881 census that Rose has copied is the Elizabeth Clark recorded as Elizabeth Evans age 9?
(Also in that census his Mother Jane is recorded as from Bristol)
Mary Evans in 1881 is recorded as 8 months, so is the Mary Clark a different Mary?
Have you got Jane married to Thomas Clark in 1871, or did she marry after the census?

I do not understand the 1911 census posted.
Who were Florry Evans' parents, and who was Thomas Clark, son, 1894? Is Thomas Clark a son of Mary or Elizabeth Clark?

David Report 25 Jun 2011 09:30

thanks Patchem, William was 14 on the 1901 census, the older of the 2 Thomas is Elizabeth Clarks son and grand son to Jane Evans (clark).

Jane Garland married Thomas Clark Dec 1866 Dudley 6c 87
Thomas Clark died Dudley 1877,
John and Jane married in Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland May 7th 1877.

the thing that has fooled me is the John Jnr in 1911 says he was born in Thornaby Nth Yorks, add that to his marriage cert saying that john senior is his father.

David Report 25 Jun 2011 16:55
