Hi

A bit stuck - and this is my second request for help albeit on another side of the family.

I have a Joseph McEwan (who sometimes later in life [census] calls himself John occassionally [also some of his children have been refrred to as McEwen. MC has him marrying in 1870 to elizabth Murray in greenock. I have his DC as being in Johnstone renfrew in 1920. His MC has his Dad as Charles McEwan and Mum as Mary Smith.

Can't find any birth intel on irish or scottish record - have tried wildcards on Scotland's people.

Also - unlike the rest of my Tree - there are limited reatives on GR - so i can't even get a leg up that way.

Any advice or help would as evr be appreciated.

Have you found him in any of the censuses?
Thanks

Hi

Mega thanks - interstingly - Dad doesn't seem to be about in 1841- but this seems strong evidence of the famil;y presence - and the vennel as the place they lived links with 1881. will get this into GR and see if any hot links happen

also agnes smith - i Mary's maiden name was smith

Hi All

Any idea what a fenk dealer would be - Google has it as something to do with whale blubber.

As you have Charles in the Cesus you should be able to find a death in Scotlandspeople.

Joseph was born before Civil registration started in Scotland but the births of the older children should be on scotlandspeople and one of their birth certs will give you when and where Charles and Mary married.

No children born after 1855 to Charles and Mary.If Charles died before 1855 then a poor relief record may help.Mitchell Library,Glasgow will do a seach if you can't visit.Fee involved.

Re the occup[ation - 'Fenk dealer'

The Scottish census are very badly transcribed on Ancestry and you cannot check the image.

Images are available, I think, pay to view on ScotlandsPeople.

I have found this which 'may' be what it is meant to be on the Old Occupations site:

'Fent Dealer' Dealer in "Fents" - cloth remnants, ends of bolts of cloth etc

This would seem to be more appropriate perhaps??

Ahh, - I see that Mary was a Draper on 1861 which makes the 'Fent dealer' for 1851 look about right !

Draper - Dealer in fabrics and sewing goods - in use today. From the French "drap-de-Berry", a woollen cloth coming from Berry in France

....and this is even stranger - Jospehs son Hugh (who is my gg grandpa) is called Hugh McDonald McEwan. Here we see his sister Theresa called McDonald - with two kids. So clearly there must have been an affinity for this McDonald chap as the brother of the new Mrs Mcdonald naemd his son after him
