Joseph was born before Civil registration started in Scotland but the births of the older children should be on scotlandspeople and one of their birth certs will give you when and where Charles and Mary married. |

There is 1Match for a Mary McEwan other surname Smith in Greenock between 1871-1881 .Sorry not a unit left to look.That's your Mary Smith.Father John Smith -Labourer .No Mother given. |

....and this is even stranger - Jospehs son Hugh (who is my gg grandpa) is called Hugh McDonald McEwan. Here we see his sister Theresa called McDonald - with two kids. So clearly there must have been an affinity for this McDonald chap as the brother of the new Mrs Mcdonald naemd his son after him |
