Thanks everyone - seems that nobody can find her and her children. Maybe they were at sea sailing from South Africa to the UK.

Sorry but I knew of the Cory's but didn't know that lived adjacent to their brother/uncle and the name Fridrich Richert 12 without Cory surprised me. I wouldn't have suspected him there (and being daft wouldn't have recognised the Cory surname initially). Sorry to be seen to be unappreciative of your researches on my behalf. But William & Mary Ann were negotiating with the Boer generals and met Winston Churchill in Lindley before their town was burnt down by the British in their scorched earth policy. No record of the return sailing but nan was "packed off" to help her "poor" sister that had been so much in the "last two years" according to the letter written by the sisters' father JLC Brooke.

The person who has John Loombe Cory is called Frank. Forgive me for being stupid, but you seem to be called John??

If you knew all that, why did you ask 'who on earth is Frederick'?

John

John Report 26 Jun 2011 20:13

Sorry folks my son has just broken his femur during an IronMan triathlon in Nice, France and so I've been offline all day.

The idiot who has John Loombe Cory b1875 is me and I'm afraid to tell you that I knew all that lot. It took me years even though I too live in Kings Lynn. The father of the Cory family died in 1886 and Emma moved adjacent to her brother John Loombe Culham Brooke - I didn't know that!

BUT still no sign of the Africans is there. Someone asked where the father was born - 26 Feb 1864, at 299, Parliamentary Road, Glasgow, Scotland. In case anyone needs to use ScotlandsPeople - it's great but I can't get started with my lost folk.

Does your Brooke line tie in with these Brookes?

John Loombe Cory b1875 is on someone's tree on Genes.

Here's a connection possibly:

Marriages Mar 1871

Brooke Emma Mary C King's L. 4b 543

Cory Walter Chapman King's L. 4b 543

Janice

Janice Report 26 Jun 2011 15:11

Also from FreeBMD,
it should be Florence Emma B rather than Frances.

One of the Cory children reg'd in Kings Lynn is

Cory John Loombe King's L. 4b 331 (1875)

so looks like there's a family connection.

John,

when was the father William born and where?

Janice

Janice Report 26 Jun 2011 14:58

On the original it looks like Frederick Robert Coy(?) - visitor -and it's the same surname as Frances Emma on the next page.

EDIT from FreeBMD it's Frederick Robert Cory, birth reg'd Kings Lynn

John,

looking at the original1891 census I can just make out that it states;

Mary Ann Jane Spence visitor.

The Broche family look more likely to be Brooke.

And someone has put aa alternate name for Calham Broche; John Loombe Culham Brooke

John Report 26 Jun 2011 14:44

Maybe I'm wrong and the Enumerator was reading a Gaelic equivalent "Mary Ann Fanrsfeuar". John & father William perhaps in Elgin together with the same variation in 1891 and all of them in 1901? Am I grabbing at straws?

Who on earth was "Fridrich Richert 12 " in the middle of nan's family in 1891?

John

John Report 26 Jun 2011 14:32

Thanks folks - I'd got all that and my supposition is that "John Loombe Culham Brooke" b 10:20am 12 Nov 1890 at Brook Cottage, Moycroft, Elgin, Moray was with the family elsewhere (with the g'parents back in Elgin.

Interesting what a jumble of names there was in 1891 - correct but spelt strangely. I've seen the Head of Households handwriting so either the enumerator had poor writing or the transcription to computer was poor.

Still no sign of them on either England or Scotland's censuses in 1901?

Janice

What were the initials of your nan's parents? There's an "infant" Brooke sailing in 1901with a Mr & Mrs C J Brooke on the SS Yarrawonga. It's going from Sydney to London, but they got on it in Cape Town.

John

John Report 26 Jun 2011 08:16

I know that they quit SA before Nov 1901 as nan was with them then. I have them on the Braemar Castle sailing back from Southampton Sept 1902. They were said to be in England & Scotland for 2 years and so I imagined that be on some census but ......

patchem

patchem Report 25 Jun 2011 22:56

I cannot yet see them.
You have Iris born 1900 in South Africa, after the Boer War had started. Could the family have arrived in England after the 1901 census?

John

John Report 25 Jun 2011 21:49

In the Spence group is Florence Wylie Spence and nan who was possibly with them for part of their evacuation was either Florence Wylie Brooke or Emma Florence Wylie Brooke.
