If you say Isobel quickly with a Northumberland accent, it could conceivably sound like Elizabeth. !

Not many could write their name so relied on who ever was taking the info down.

(just one possible explanation )

Remember that in 1841 census, adult ages were rounded down to the nearest 5, so he could have been up to 4 years older than stated.

Thanks Maddie.

I can only find Thomas marrying Isabel in 1796 (but I know Elizabeth may not have married Thomas).

Could Pattison Newton born 1808 be the Pattison Newton born 1811 in various censuses (censii?) who had 2nd child, Thomas Newton born 1833.

..... and what do you make of the Elizabeth/Isabel scenario?

Mike *

Mike * Report 16 Jul 2011 16:08

If Thomas married twice, it would be unusual to marry 2 Pattisons/Pattersons.

Maybe Isabel was misheard .

Can anyone help, please?

Isabel Pattison married Thomas Newton in 1796 but the mother of Pattison Newton (b 1808 and I thought it should be 1811) is given as Elizabeth Pattison.

Have I got it wrong?

Is Isabel actually Pattison Newton's mother or have I got the wrong Pattison Newton altogether?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the information, SAFC.

These are my husband's ancestors but he has noted that the names of the two women are different (Elizabeth and Isabel). He has begun searching to see whether Thomas was married twice.

Many thanks.
