Hi all!
Stuck again. I recently signed up for a 14 day trial on Ancestry, as I was at the stage I needed access to the West Yorkshire Parish records.
James Wilks was my 4x grandfather. He was a farmer in Farnley in Leeds and married Thomasina/Tomasin/Tomasina(plus other spellings). Thomasina was born in the year 1776 according to the 1841 census and they had 9 children at least. these had been tricky to find;
John Wilk 1802 - marries Susannah Gaunt(1804) in 1826 Elizabeth Wilks 1804 - guessing died? Sarah Wilks 1807 -guessing died? James Wilks 1809 - ??? Stephen Wilks 1811 - Clothier and alive in 1841 Sarah Wilks 1815 - ??? William Wilks 1818 - guessing died? William Wilks 1824 - alive in 1841 Elizabeth Wilks 1827 - My 3x grandmother - died 1905.
What I would like to find is James and Thomasina's marriage. I have spent the last two nights searching and I can't find it! Does this mean they weren't married???
Also, I cant find the deaths of their children. I'm guessing three died very young, as they gave latter children the same names...
Also cant find Thomasina's death date.
Any help with any of these would be fab or if anyone can point me in a different direction?
Much thanks

Just some things which don't add up. On the 1841 census it has William aged 20. These ages are rounded down, not up so that would mean that he was born at least before 1821. Also Elizabeth is entered as 1827 whilst it is not beyond possibility but that would mean that Thomasina would be at least 51 when she gave birth but could be older as she is entered as 65 but she could be up to 69. -jl

Well, James and Thomasin 'did' have a daughter called Elizabeth but she was born c 1404:
Name: Elizth. Wilks Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 12 Feb 1804 Baptism/Christening Place: FARNLEY BY LEEDS,YORK,ENGLAND Birth Date: 24 Jan 1804
Father's Name: James Wilks Mother's Name: Tomasin
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: P00958-1 System Origin: England-ODM Source Film Number: 599301 Reference Number: Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
SO............, unless 'this Elizabeth died and they had another one (unlikely because of their ages, the Elizabeth shown with them on 1841 is NOT their daughter!
Perhaps a grandchild??, or even some other relative?
.............................
I have also found 3 other children children for them:
Sarah, christened 1st October, 1815,
William, christened 27th September, 1818
and John, born 9th Jan, 1802 and christened 7th Feb, 1802
All found on Familysearch site.

How about a theory then ???
Name: Elizabeth Gaunt Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 01 Oct 1826 Baptism/Christening Place: FARNLEY BY LEEDS,YORK,ENGLAND
Mother's Name: Susannah Gaunt
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C00958-2 System Origin: England-ODM Source Film Number: 918395 Reference Number: Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Daughter of Susannah, who married John Wilks (son of James + Thomasin), then becoming Elizabeth Gaunt Wilks after her mother's marriage.
This makes her the 'step' grand-daughter of James + Thomasin and living with them on 1841???
I will work on it!

Hi all and hello again Dea! I am soo confused!!!
I have only scan read all the above, will look at it all in more detail soon. Yes, Dea, my Elizabeth did marry Benjamin Brown and yes, i was thinking along the lines that Thomasina was too old, but you have to keep an open mind. I have another thread on here and i dont know how to post the link. ROBERT HENRY GAUNT WILKS, but called himself...20 years later,,,ROBERT HENRY WILKS GAUNT...he was her first born born out of wedlock. If someone can tell me how to put the link on here, I think it will help everybody.
This is a puzzle!

Thanks Debi, I have now read back through your other thread and believe that my above theory is very probably correct.
'Your Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Gaunt, daughter of Susanah who married John Wilks.
She then became Elizabeth Gaunt Wilks.
She seems to have had an illigitamate child in 1851.
She uses the 2 surnames variously throughout her life.
Father unknown.
She later marries Benjamin Brown in 1855
Read through the above again and see what you think.

Think you've cracked it again Dea!
So, Susannah had Elizabeth out of wedlock, her baptism was on 1st Oct 1826, then she married John Wilks in 6th Nov 1826???
I did find the above married and it did make me think with her surname being Gaunt!
Do you have access to my tree?
If not, request it and you can look at what Ive got. Will have to look carefully at Thomasina and James children and take some off now!
God. I lurve this hobby!
Thanks sooo much Dea and everyone!!!
Did anyone get anywhere with Thomasinas marriage date?

Ah, yes, I do have access to your tree already, I had forgotten that as SO many people give me access, I cannot keep track of them :-D
Have to go out just now but will look through it later .
Haven't found anything on James + Thomasina's marriage yet but I have an 'idea' ;-) which I will follow up on when I get back.

Also. Elizabeth must have been seeing John at the time she was pregnant with Robert, as on his birth cert, he is named as ROBERT HENRY GAUNT WILKS, but the space for the father in blank! So he has his mothers surname and step fathers...but from the age of 20, always uses Gaunt and its down to this change that 5 generations of my family have all been Gaunts!!!
Amazing when you think about it. :-)

Hi, Back now,
Firstly - Elizabeth wasn't 'seeing' John - he was her stepfather!!
Secondly, Robert does have Elizabeth's surname, but the other is the surname of his 'step' grandfather.
There is no mention of his father.
I will have a cup of tea and then see if I can find anything more for you.
