I am looking for the marriage of

Jeremiah Burton b 1838ish Winchmore Hill Middlesex/London
Clara Nicholl (variations) b 1846 Watford Hertfordshire.

In the 1911 census they have been married 42 years? I can't find a marriage for them at all.

Also trying to find Jeremiah on the 1861 census.

Still seems as if the 1861 for Jeremiah and the rest of the family is elusive.

It is the 1861 that I can't find. Can't find it for any of the other family members either.
I have all the others attached to the family.

There is a Burton family in 1851with several chldren born Winchmore Hill (as Jeremiah claims to be)

Curious that Jeremiah in 1841 has become Alfred in 1851
And I wonder about a marriage 1859 Mar Q in Clerkenwell for a Jeremiah Alfred Burton to either Agnes Emslie or Ann Wilson
Could it be the reason we cant find the marriage to Clara is that they were unable to marry becuse of an earlier union for Jeremiah?

There is a Jeremiah Burton born 1844 bBasford Notts and died 1899 Jul Q Basford -so I dont think the Basford marriage refers to our Jeremiah

It has always puzzled me to find Alfred in the 1851 census only.
It sounds like you are on the right path for Jeremiah married in Clerkenwell.
I will look into that side of the marriage.
It would solve a lot of searching if that was the case.
At last a bit of gossip for my husbands side of the family. Makes a change from mine!!!
John Burton was a widow about 1858. That is the right man.

I have just looked up Family Search and it is Ann Wilson. :-D

Another possibility is that Jeremiah joined the army -he would have been 18 in 1857 and if he did the 12 year service stint would have left 1869 in time to link up with Clara -and would maybe have been serving abroad (India or Ireland) 1861

I did find a J Burton aged 23 , Soldier born England in Infantry Barracks in 1861 inGlasgow, but this was on Ancestry and when I tried to get it up on Scotlandspeople I got "No Match"
