Elissa,
I have never successfully managed to do that before. If you bear with me I will post any other information that I spot when reading the service records.

Thank you ever so much, that's really helpful. Is there no place to record father, or has it just been left blank?
If it has been left blank would you mind looking at the service record of his brother Charles Frederick Aldous to see if the same has been done on his?

According to the 1901 Census, Charles William was a Commercial Clerk
Note that another tree on ancestry has his death as occurring in 1927 ...... but I seriously think this tree has confused and combined information on two Charles William Aldous's, both born in 1857. But one (yours) was born in Colchester, Essex and the other was born in Woolwich, Kent.

Thank you all for all your help.
Charles William Aldous was born 1857 in Colcehster. He married and moved to Manchester where he had his children with Mary Ann Cansdale. However he then left the family. I wondered whether the fact that Harold Frank had failed to name Charles William on his service record suggests that he had in some way disowned him because Charles William abandoned his mother. I have done a lot of reseach into the family but I'm now tryingto gauge their attitudes to Charles William leaving.
So do the service reocrds mother and father, or do they just record next of kin?

Would anyone mind looking at the service record for Cyril Aldous born c1895 and Percy Aldous born c1896 and see where they come from or what their next of kins names are. Charles and Harold had brothers called Percy and Cyril but I don't know if they joined the army.
Thank you!

the service records only name ONE person as next-of-kin
If the soldier is single, the order is Father, then Mother if father is dead (or left the family)
If the soldier is married, his Wife is NOK ............... replacing the parent named earlier if he marries after joining the forces.

Thank you Sylvia for explaning that.
Thank you ever so much for the emails George. It looks like Mary Ann and Charles William sent four sons to war. I daren't ask whether there is a Fred Aldous as well? It must have been an awful time for the family.
