You might consider direct contact with the mourners:
http://www.mytelus.com/phonebook/display.do

NB The UK is 8 hrs ahead of most of BC if you phone.

You'll have seen from the BC BMDs URL I posted that if Jack were born 1914 in BC, then you've another 24 y to wait out the closure period.

Thanks Margee and mgnv.
I am trying to confirm that the Jack Smeeton mentioned is in fact the son of Anton - the names etc are a HUGE coincidence if not....
I dont want to add all those mentioned to my tree if its incorrect.

Survived - no listing for Antan at http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14

NB 1) In Victoria, go down Government St, 1km past the Empress. South Turner is a block W, near the water, maybe 400m from Beacon Hill Park.
2) From Victoria, head up the inner (Georgia Strait) coast 180 km. Denman Is is 1 km off-shore - it's abt 15 x 5 km in size.

I didn't check out:

Published in the Victoria Times-Colonist on 3/17/2005.
PHILLIPS, Jack (John Antan Smeeton) Of Denman Island passed away on Mar 2nd. Just shy of his 91st birthday, he made his passage peacefully with his Doctor, family and health care workers with him at home on Denman Island. Predeceased by his wife Mary in 1993, he leaves sons Antan (Tony) and family in Nanoose, Noel and family in Ladysmith/ Chemainus, Delbert and family of Denman Island and daughter Leslie Lundgren and family in Duncan. He leaves 3 younger brothers, Vic and Randy in North Vancouver and Ray of Courtenay. Jack was born in Metchosin, lived for a while in Beaverlodge Alberta, and grew up in Capilano, North Vancouver. Jack and his brothers ran LiteCraft, a North Vancouver Boat Building Company in the 1940s and 50s. Jack moved to Lake Cowichan in 1960 as Assistant Forest Ranger. He finished his career working in the woods, road building and finally as licensed painter at Crown Zellerbach. Jack and Mary left Lake Cowichan in 1979 to retire on Denman Island. He served numerous terms as president of the Lake Cowichan Legion and held executive positions with the Denman Legion. An Artillery soldier, Jack served in Italy, France, Germany and helped liberate Holland. Before going overseas he worked at Boeing Aircraft where his sense of humour served him well. He once spray painted Royal Airforce Insignias on a Dragonfly's wings, and brought the insect to the head office claiming he'd discovered the Allies secret weapon to win the war. They were not amused. His wit and intelligence will be missed. A living memorial was held for Jack on his 90th birthday last year, a party he truly enjoyed. A tea in his honour will be held on Denman Island in May.

That's as much as I can find for now.

I have worldwide mainly for US records, so don't know a lot about Canadian records. But, if I understand correctly, they have much stricter privacy laws so most collections are not very recent. For example, Ancestry's collections for BC stop at 1899 for births and 1924 for marriages.

(However, I don't mind being enlightened by a Canadian expert if I'm wrong!)

Oh, I see. Well, I'm not finding anything on Ancestry Worldwide for him, but their records don't, I believe, cover the whole of Canada.

One of our Canuck friends on here might be able to help further. (But I'll keep digging around).
