I will PM you David.

It does not state the name of the Institution on Ancestry for Frederick in 1901.........he is on page 5.
Going back to page 1, it names the Surgeons, Physicians etc so he was obviously in Hospital.

To finding him mentioned on the 1911 Census.

Searching for him myself I can only find him on the 1901 Census at which point he was a patient of some kind at an institute I haven't yet found the name of.

I'm trying to understand the process... could I bother you to explain how you did it?

@Kim - that's wonderful thank you.

@Dea - Very useful thanks. Also - I don't know the dates but - I'm aware that Warrington used to be classed as Lancashire but at some point the borders/postcodes were amended and since then Warrington has been classed as being in Cheshire. There's a staunch group of Lancashire V's Cheshire supporters!

@PricklyHolly - What a fantastic find.... I'll look it up for sure. If there's a solid link from me to him/them I'm very curious as to who the author was.... :-D

If they were born after 1911/1912, then you can do a search on freeBMD site putting in just the surname and mother's maiden surname - this would show all the children.

Mother's maiden names were not recorded prior to 1911 online, except if you are lucky enough to find them on a localBMD site such as LancsBMD, where many of the mother's maiden names have been recorded right back to 1837 !

There is also LancsOPC site which has many parish records transcribed going back hundreds of years !

I note that many of your are from Lancashire so these sites should be very useful.

Also - you have one from Warrington which for some strage reason you will find under Cheshire BMD site.

Hope this helps.

David,
with the Merseyside connection, do have a look at the excellent transcription site:

www.lan-opc.org.uk

I tapped the surname Loney into the search box and found at least one entry for the Loney's referred to in the census entry Prickly Holly has given you. The site is being updated all the time and It's all free to use.

Best wishes with your search

I have another question for you all...

Unless I'm missing something, it seems to me that it would be very easy to miss entire branches of any given family.

For example, I know that my Mum was one of 9 children. But in finding my Nan's details so far (Margaret Mercer), I can see no way of verifying the kids that she had. Of course I don't need to in her case as I know of the kids that she had... but going back further this isn't the case. E.g. was my Nan an only child or one of multiple kids - for the record I do know she had at least one sister, but there could well be more.

Are the census records the only way of trying to verify the children of any "distant" relative or (aside from knowledge amongst living family members) is there another approach?

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 13 Sep 2011 09:06

Simple answer to a simple question! :-)

You'll find that one hard to set up in a family tree! I guess the only way would be to enter your dad twice.

As Patchem says "Dye or Mercer" does suggest she had been married before (I have a similar entry in my tree and was fortunate to find both marriages). However, given the age of Margaret and when she married your grandfather, there's a very small window.

@Judith

I did wonder if I'd get asked this very question... or perhaps more specifically, I wondered how long it would be before I was asked :-)

In brief: I was adopted by my Dad when (or shortly before/after) he married my Mum.

"Margaret Mercer & Eric Loney" and "Patricia Carroll & Norman Greenwood" were my biological grandparents, whilst "Marjorie Verdon & Joseph Burns" were my grandparents by way of the adoption.

I'm interested in exploring all three branches of my "family" tree.

@Everyone else.... thank you so much for your help. I'll look through all of the information you've posted. I was indeed asking how I would go about finding them myself but that's ok, I'm likely to still go digging regardless so that I can at least understand the process etc.

David, quick question/observation.

If these are your "nans" and "grandads" - how have you got three of each?

Prickly, we were kinda letting David find them for himself. He was asking us how he can find them. :-)

I only put in Margaret because it wasn't found before. And to show David that spelling isn't always correct.

There's no birth on FreeBMD of a Margaret Mercer born 1923/24 with mother's maiden name Clark. There's thiis one registered Jan/Feb/March quarter 1924 which is possible if she was born Nov. 1923 but mother's maiden name is Tasker:

Hey guys - thank you so much for your help.

I'm afraid I don't know the first names of my great grandparents... I literally just have their mother's maiden names to go on.

For example,

My Nans:

Margaret Mercer,
- born: 24/11/1923,
- Prescot, Lancashire.
- Not yet sure why, but her surname on her marriage details show "Dye or Mercer".
- Mother's Maiden Name: Clark. (I have reason to believe her Mother's first name was "Edith")
- I think her Father (My Great Grandfather) was called James Mercer

Patricia Carroll,
- born: 27/10/1936,
- Prescot, Lancashire.
- Mother's Maiden Name: Pierce

Marjorie Verdon,
- born: 09/08/1936,
- Warrington, Lancashire.
- Mother's Maiden Name: Barnett

My Grandads (same order as wives above):

Eric Loney
- born: 1919 (Death cert shows 1918)
- Toxteth Park, Lancashire
- Mother's Maiden Name: Golding

Norman Greenwood
- born: 05/11/1936
- Prescot Lancashire
- Mother's Maiden Name: Crawford (i think)

Joseph Burns
- born: 14/12/1934
- Liverpool South (i think)
- Mother's Maiden Name: Hoskinson (i think)

I figure I'm going to have to start ordering hard copy birth certificates etc to get much more info?
