Could someone help me out with my Granddad's lookup please. Because of the surname being so very common I am having trouble deciphering who is an ancestor and who is not. I have hopefully linked this correctly William Green & Emily Louisa Gregory married 1872 in West Ham Essex and on the 1881 Census I found that their children were William b.1884 Alfred b. 1893 Alice b.1888 Arthur b.1896 Ada b.1880 and Harry Green who then married Emily Harding in 1904, they then had children Alice b.1907 Harry and George b.1909 Albert b.1915 Ronald b.1926 James b.1930 and finally George Green b.1915.
Any help with this is much needed as there is no one on the Green side that can help me with ancestor surnames. :-0

Chris you are spot on with the Shayes family one! I'm now just trying to locate the origins of John Green, Williams father and also Emily's father William Shayes. Something was leading me to the Medway region but I need to do a lot of digging before I know for certain. You guys are wonderful with all your help - you are most kind THANK YOU!!!! :-D

Andrew

Andrew Report 14 Sep 2011 15:55

Also I came across this as an occupation on one of the census's may sound stupid to you guys but I have no idea what it is and google didnt help either. Elorite Articles???

brummiejan Report 14 Sep 2011 16:04

It's on the 1911 census isn't it? It does look like that on the image, the best I can come up with is ebonite maybe?

'Ebonite is the brand name for a type of hard rubber used for a variety of products from clarinet mouthpieces to bowling balls. Its name derives from its intended use as a substitute for ebony wood. Ebonite is also known as vulcanite because it is created through vulcanizing rubber. Scientists and engineers working in the United States and Great Britain first made the material in the late 1830s.

History

Charles Goodyear invented vulcanite in 1839 by heating rubber with sulfur for a long period of time--a process called vulcanization. He gained a patent for vulcanization in 1843. A British scientist, Thomas Hancock, patented a similar process at about the same time.'

Andrew Report 14 Sep 2011 16:27

LOL thank you Jan - It is a strange one isnt it! God only knows what she use to do then. Perhaps she ended up a famous bowls or clarinet player. The family up until the late 40's were all into boiler making, so maybe that had something to do with it.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 14 Sep 2011 16:29

If I am right, I imagine she was employed in a factory making things from this stuff? I wish she was a bowls champion though!
Worth googling to find out more.

Thanks again Jan - You did'nt see anything definite about John Green's and William Shayes ancestors did you by any chance? I was getting very confused at this point so think I may have gone down the wrong path with their family.

Andrew Report 14 Sep 2011 16:59

Lol yep it was on the one Chris found with Civil Parish:
Bromley Municipal Borough:
Address:
25, Ellesmere Street, Bromley County:
Middlesex

Name: William Green (Boiler Maker)
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Spouse Name: Emily Shayes
Spouse Age: 18
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 05 Aug 1878
Parish: St Mary, Bromley St Leonard
County: Middlesex
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: John Green (Boiler Maker)
Spouse Father Name: William Shayes

If that helps you with finding anything further you're a miracle worker. From what I saw John Green looked like he may then have originated from Medway.

Just speculating. The street is only 0.2 miles from Ellesmere Street, Note I think this couple married well after William's birth though, so a very long shot. Maybe others with full Ancestry access can look at parish records:

Blimey you two are good! :-D I reckon the Green family are correct because the boiler maker connection is just too good to be coincedence and what with being in the same region would all add up. With the Shayer family, Chris, would this be due to the pronounciation being confused with the written transcribes do you think? As it was Shayes before hand. Thank you to both of you once again, i dont think I would have found that as I had got Rochester from somewhere lol

Andrew, to follow up on the John Green 1881. You can see there are sons Richard, John and Isaac Green . John obviously re-married to Ann at some point and these are obviously not her children.

I am fairly sure this is the same family 1871. The ages and birthplaces for the sons match exaxtly to those 1881. Mary is married, husband 'at sea'. (Fixing boilers maybe!!) There is a son William - if this is not your William it excludes the John I found:

1871 England Census
Name: William Green
