How very sad.
Hopefully you will find some survivors.

Following some of these through on freebmd I found a possible marriage of an Evelyn H. SHEATH to a Thomas BRIGGS.

Noting that the last child of that marriage seemed to be in 1942, I looked for a possible death for Thomas on Commonwealth War Graves site only to find there that many more of the family perished in the war

Deaths Jun 1943

Briggs Evelyn 25 Sunderland 10a 631
Briggs Mary I 58 Sunderland 10a 601
Briggs Michael F 0 Sunderland 10a 631
Briggs Thomas 3 Sunderland 10a 631

Off to look for survivors now.

Thank you Vera.

I will investigate that William BROWN a bit more., to see if that clarifies the situation.

Freebmd suggests that there might be more children for William and Isabella SHEATH , so I'd better check them out too.

Many thanks everyone for your input and great searching.
I'm very grateful.

Oh... I'm too slow.
Thank you too Marie Celeste and safc.

So the picture is more muddled than I thought, but is gradually sorting out.

So did young William stay as a BROWN?
Please could someone see if he is still with his grandfather Edward SHEATH in 1911.
Edward and Sarah were still alive in Southampton ? then

Thank you too Vera.

I have not found any Sunderland SHEATH births.
It is very much a southern name, apart from a clutch in the Birmingham area, at that time.

I think WHJ Sheath is the son of an Edward.b. abt 1857 in Southampton. I think his (E's) wife Sarah Ann died in 1884 ( perhaps the reason Caroline took him in ) and Edward later married another Sarah in1889.

I have just seen a note on my PC tree that Edward and Sarah have a grandson, William BROWN aged 3 with them in Southampton in 1901 census...... the surname of William's possible later wife..

But - that 1911 appears to be a lodging house. The proprietor completing the return may not have been aware of his lodger's private lives. He may have assumed that William was single because he didn't have a wife with him. William may have even said he was single for whatever reason.

I reckon little Alice must have been the third child from the 1911:

Thank you Flick.

I still think this may be him.... Was he married?... I see that has been added, Thank you.

If it's the one I think it is, he was living with a married aunt , Caroline MCGREGOR in Durham by 1891, so perhaps he didn't know he was born in the south???
She was Caroline SHEATH

I wonder which one he married?....IF HE DID.
Is it possible to look for his wife please?

I have just found an 'out of area' marriage on freebmd for a possible relative.

Marriages Jun 1904

Brown Elizabeth Sunderland 10a 1229
Brown Isabella Sunderland 10a 1229
Lamb John Henry Sunderland 10a 1229
Sheath William John H Sunderland 10a 1229<<<<<<<<<<<

I think this may be William born in Southampton in 1880.
I may have found a Sunderland death of him in 1948

Please could someone see if they can find him in 1911?

Gwyn
