Ferraristi Report 20 Oct 2011 09:57

In the 1881 census, Isaac Armstrong b.1855 in Mansfield, the brother of my 3x great grandfather was listed living at Wood Court in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire with his wife Ann and 3 kids. In the 1891 census, he is listed as an inmate at Dartmoor prison which from what I can make out was for those convicted of more serious crimes and given lengthy sentences or hard labour.

The only one of the family I can find after 1891 is Frank, the youngest child and by the 1901 census he is listed at Mansfield Union Workshouse. Can anyone help me go further to see what happened to the family? I don't seem to be able to find death records for any of them.

Ferraristi Report 20 Oct 2011 10:03

Correction - sorry, Frank is listed in the Mansfield Union Workshouse in the 1891 census, i.e. at the same time his father was in prison, aged 10.

Ok, thanks Andy. Where would you suggest I go to try and find out more? Also, why do you think I am unable to find records for the rest of the family?

Thanks

David

David Report 20 Oct 2011 10:32

Here is why he ended up in Dartmoor:

Sheffield & Rotherham Independent, Mon. July 10th 1882

"On Saturday at Mansfield, Isaac Armstrong was charged with stealing a lamb from the racecourse, Mansfield, the property of John Rolling, Crown Farm. From information received Sergeant Hind went to the prisoner's house and found the carcase of the lamb upstairs in a bedroom, the skin being under the bed. Remanded.

Another account says he was committed for trial at Notts Assizes and that the value of the lamb was £2.

From an account in the same paper July 26th 1882:
At the trial it was stated that he had in the past been fined or imprisoned for 15 offences and because of this, he was sentenced to penal servitude for 5 years.

Always tricky when families just disappear from records. They might have emigrated or changed name.

Thanks everyone - didn't exactly learn his lesson did he? 5 years in 1882, gets out in 1887, immediately steals a horse and gets sent to Dartmoor for 7 years (found an entry on derbycourt.com related to him stealing the horse from Grassmoor Colliery and getting a 7 year sentence).

BrabarafromYorkshire - thanks for that. I didn't have a maiden name for Ann so I'll follow up on that one.

Mel - I don't think that's him as the place of birth doesn't match to that given in the 1881 census (Mansfield). However, I did come across a branch of the family that moved to Barrow, so I'll definitely follow that up thankyou.

Pam - thanks for that

David - where should I be looking for access to newspaper references like the one you gave?

Thanks again everyone for your help.

The newspaper references came from 19th Century Newspapers which you can access online through library membership. Mine is via Lancashire libraries but some other counties have the same access.
