Having difficulty in finding maiden names as follows:

Mary ? b.1844 married John NORTON b. 1842 c.1863 possibly at Tunstall or Wolverhampton.

Ann ? b. 1809 married Thomas NORTON b. 1807 possibly at Birmingham.

Being a newbie any help would be greatly appreciated.

Potty Report 21 Oct 2011 14:12

The best place to search for marriages is freebmd:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

Have you found either couple on a census with children? If so, the DOB of the eldest child will help with the marriage date.

Flick

Flick Report 21 Oct 2011 14:16

The marriage of Thomas and Ann may have been pre-GRO (came into being July 1837)

Try.............

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

What were the birthplaces of the people you name?

Potty

Potty Report 21 Oct 2011 14:18

Are these couples your direct ancestors? If so, it would be better to get the birth cert of the child who is your direct ancestor which would give the mother's maiden name.

The marriage of Ann and Thomas is likely to be before civil registration started in 1837 so you will need to search parish records.

If you can give all the info you have, people will have a better chance of helping you.

What about the younger couple?

What can you tell us about them to help us to help you?

Mehalahland

Mehalahland Report 21 Oct 2011 15:42

Hi Flick

From 1881 Census
Norton John Head b.1841 at Wolverhampton
Mary Wife b.1844 at Tunstall
Henry Son b.1870 at Darlington
Margaret Daughter b.1873 at ditto
Harriet ditto b, 1875 at ditto
John G Son b.1878 at ditto
Charles W Son b.1880 at ditto (MY GGrandfather)

I understand that birth records prior to 1911 do not indicate mothers maiden name is that correct?

If so I presume the only way is to apply to GRO for certificates.

Regards

David

Hi Mike

Although his YOB on the 1851 Census is shown as 1850.

Can you explain the Wolverhampton 17 359.

Many thanks

David

Potty Report 21 Oct 2011 16:02

Hi David, just in case Mike isn't around at the moment: Wolverhampton 17 359, are the District, Vol and Page number that you will need to buy the cert online from the GRO. Certs cost £9.25 if you have this info. This is the site address:
www.gro.gov.uk/

As you have ancestors from Staffordshire, you might find this site useful:

http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi

Some local bmd sites do give MMN pre1911 and they also "tie" up the partners to a marriage.

Ages on censuses are rarely accurate ( depends whether the birthday falls before of after the census date ... or whether they are telling the truth or not !!)

Mehalahland

Mehalahland Report 21 Oct 2011 16:16

Potty you must be a mind reader 2 minutes before my thought process.

Thanks for the stffordshirebmd hint will look into that.

Thank you all for your help this afternoon.

Flick

Flick Report 21 Oct 2011 16:19

Year of birth on census transcriptions is ESTIMATED......based on the person's age at the time.

A child born OND qtr 1849 would be aged ONE when 1851 census was taken.............hence est YOB 1850

Always take into account the date of the census.......and the child's birth date
