been looking for my maternal grandfather know he was Amos Edward black born around 1871-1881 also know he had irish connections.have had no luck on genes finding out any thing about him.have been on familysearch.org and found amos edward black born 1877 who left ireland to come to england in 1901 age 24.this site also says he married Louisa violet hall in sheppey kent 1895, had a daughter Gladys lilian edith black, baptism/christening 7 feb 1897 sheerness kent. i have been led to believe but not certain that my grandmother may have been caroline green/smith have followed this option through but to no avail.secrets seem to be a big thing in my family?cant find any thing of births deaths or marrige on her?what are the chances of this amos black being a possible link to my amos or am i barking up the wrong tree (ha ha ).must say some dates are a bit confused.i know i have a lot of relatives in kent, surrey, hampshire and berkshire. any one think i may have hit the jackpot with this one. i know i am asking big but am new to this. thanks. :-S :-S

The first point needing clarification is.........

Who was your mother?

When and where was she born?

Don't understand the connection for a Caroline Green/Smith.

If you follow her line back through her child ie your mum or dad then get her marriage cert you should find her dads name ,if known

" i have been led to believe but not certain that my grandmother may have been caroline green/smith "

Your mother's birth cert will have her parents' names including her mother's previous name(s). You really need to have this info before you try to go back further.

A death certificate doesn't usually give place of birth.

In 1913, the registration district for Elstead was Hambledon

There is no birth registered in the district for anyone named Barbara in the second half of 1913

So basically a lot of this is based on trees on Ancestry? You need to ignore them Anis, 9 times out of ten they're not right (imo)

bit naughty to start the search all over again. You have been advised to get the marriage cert to your dad to see her fathers name

I stand corrected, Flick, re: birthplace on death certificate. I didn't know that. Guess I'm not too old to learn new things!
