Find Ancestors

I’m not very experienced in digging out my ancestry and I’m stuck on a William Buckby. I’ve a copy of his marriage certificate which shows that he was married in Irchester, Northants on 25th Dec 1909 to a widow, Charlotte Cartwright. His father was George Buckby of Kettering. The only William Buckby that I can find in the census’ back to 1881 is a William Buckby born in 1880, father George B and a bunch of siblings. The 1891 and 1901 census show George Buckby and all the siblings except William. I can find no death record in the decade 1881 – 1891 with a William Buckby of a relevant age. What am I missing and where do I go from here? Any help/comments would be very welcome.

If his father was George, as per the marriage cert, then why are you looking for a death for William ?

What is the occupation of George from the marriage cert?

Any witnesses named Buckby on the marriage cert ?

Do the occupations for the George on the census and on the marriage cert match? This might confirm you have the right family - I assume that is what you are trying to establish!

It must be the right family - his father is a shoe rivetter so presumably this trade was passed down. I can't see William elsewhere though 1891 ^ 1901.

On the 1891 census next door to Thos Brames is a Jane Buckby widow 67 a Shoe Finisher and her son William 26 also a Shoe Finisher. Also a George Buckby grandson to Jane and aged 14 a Shoe Riviter.

First, I’m not sure how to contact everybody to thank them for their prompt and overwhelming support.
I think as a result of their inputs the following scenario is a likely one.
Shortly after William Buckby was born he was taken into the family of Thomas and Clara Braines. Clara was a Buckby before marriage and was probably an aunt. Then sometime before 1901, William went to lodge with George and Emma Croft where his trade was listed as a ‘boot finisher’. This ties in with his marriage cert where he was also shown as a finisher as he was also on the 1911 census. Witnesses on his marriage cert were a J(?) Buckby and a J(?) Slater. Charlotte Buckby was a widow whose maiden name was Slater. Wedding took place on 25th Dec 1909.
I need to do more research ref Clara Braines (Buckby) and also to follow the line back to see if there is any link with my line in the Buckby tree.
