Find Ancestors

Thanks once agin. I don't have a copy of her marriage certificate as this was in South Africa. I do have a birth certificate which I got from the GRO. The family records, which are taken from one of my aunt's bibles, gives the name of Pinchen for aunts and uncles, so there could be a connection with one of the posts here. I don't know when she arrived in South Africa but I am continuing my research. The letter that I have giving marriage permission does give the impression that it is from her parents and I can find no other birth for this name.

Was going to say similar! my mums elder half sister went to Canada as a home child in 1909 from the McPhersons homes in the East End of London. Granddad had been widowed in 1906 and had to put his daughter and three sons in the home cos he had no means to support them at home whilst he worked. .

Have you found her emigration??

Just reading about the District Girls Village, which I mentioned above. It was run by Barnados.

and from there "many children emigrated to a new life in Canada, Australia and South Africa". So maybe that really is Mary in the Home.


I believe, but don't know for sure, that Barnados records can only be viewed through them. But they're very expensive. At least, I think they're very expensive. Something like £70 - £100.

if she was definitively Mary Horton Henderson then its def the right birth as theres only the one.

Maybe it was her brother who wrote because her father couldn't write.

The only Mary Henderson I can find at the moment, for 1891, born Newcastle, who is the right age, is:

Mary Henderson - age 12 - Newcastle

In the District Girls Village Home for Orphan, Neglected and Destitute Girls in Ilford, Essex (which is a couple of hundred miles from Newcastle)

I'm not sure she would have been in a home though. Although I can't find either of her parents, I would have thought that one of older siblings would have taken care of her.

Also, how would they know where to send the letter asking for permission to marry.

Have just noticed that on the 1891 census, Mary's siblings George and Jane Henderson are living with their married sister, Anna MacMahon at 5, Lambton Place.

This seems to tie them in nicely.

Can't see Mary though.

Maybe father, Robert, couldn't write, so William wrote the letter for him.

Ann Robson doesn't sound the name of someone born in France though.

Checked 5, Lambton Place, and there are no Hendersons living there by the 1881 census.

Thank you all for your efforts. I do have a birth certificate which shows a father as Robert, mother as Ann formerly Robson and an address as 5 Lambton Place, Newcastle. Family records show that she was born on 24th January, no year given. She died on 23rd November, 1944 age 63 which makes her date of birth 24.1.1879. The letter from her father states that she does not need permission for marriage but it was requested anyway. She married at St. Bree Church, Cape Town on 16th November, 1903.
