My ancestor Ebenezer Knox was sent to NSW Australia in 1818 on the Lady Castlereagh.
He was born 1769 Lillesleaf, Roxburghshire, Scotland. I want to find out out if he had a family out in OZ and when he died there. I know he is buried on Norfolk Island.

Can anyone help?

Would he he have been allowed to marry, being a convict?

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 28 Jul 2012 12:54

In all probability he would have been allowed to marry should he have wished. Two of my ancestors, both convicts did.

New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books, 1818-1930

Name: Ebenezer Knox
Birth Place: Palaigh Scotland - Roxburgh
Immigration Date: 1817
Vessel Arrived In: Lady Castlereagh
Date of Admission/Photo: 15 May 1835
Gaol: Sydney
Gaol Location: Sydney, New South Wales
Record Type: Entrance Book

Looks like he was admitted to HM Gaol on the date above. It states he was disposed (I think that means released?) Norfolk Island 23 September 1835.

Looks like he'd been in gaol before:

New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books, 1818-1930

Name: Ebenezer Knox
Vessel Arrived In: Lady Castlereagh
Date of Admission/Photo: 7 Mar 1823
Gaol: Sydney
Gaol Location: Sydney, New South Wales
Record Type: Entrance Book

The writing is terrible, but it looks like he was in for being an incorrigible character and was at large with a false certificate. He got 50 lashes and something else I can't make out. Appears to have been released 17 December.

Tom, I wonder if someone has seen the prison record which said he was disposed of (meaning released from gaol) on Norfolk Island and mistakenly thought that meant where his body was disposed of?

This convict death record confirms that the 1847 is correct:

New South Wales, Australia, Convict Death Register, 1826-1879 about Ebenezer Knox
Name: Ebenezer Knox
Age: 1817
Date of Death: 3 Apr 1847
District: Port Mie (Macquarie)

The original image confirms that he arrived 1817 on the Castlereagh.

This is interesting:

New South Wales, Australia, Colonial Secretary's Papers, 1788-1825

Name: Ebeneezer Knox
Event Date: 30 Nov 1821
Arrival Year: 1818
Vessel: Lady Castlereagh
Event Description: Memorial
Comments: Per "Lady Castlereagh", 1818
Series: (NRS 899) Memorials to the Governor, 1810-1825
Item: 4/1826
Number: 74

The letter states he should be allowed to be a settler and granted 200 acres of land at Prospect Common. He would also be "victualled from the king's store" for 6 months from taking possession of his farm.

(That 1835 gaol record did say he was a farmer).

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 28 Jul 2012 16:02

There are 48 separate mentions of Ebenezer in the Colonial Secretary's Papers, ranging from him giving character witnesses for other ex-cons to stealing sheep.

I'll have a skim through and report anything significant.

EDIT: Basically the brief mentions all pertain to the theft of three government owned sheep. Looks like Knox and two others were involved. Seems most likely that led to the gaol in 1823.

It also looks like someone tried to take his land off him in 1825. The letters end in 1825 so don't know the outcome.

There is no mention of a wife, but don't know if that would have been relevant to the documents in question.

Wow thank you so much fo all this. The info i do have about his life in OZ was from the autobiography of John Younger, the brother of the woman he had a son with back in Scotland (my ancestor). He said he was granted land but had it taken away, and that he is buried on norfolk island.
was there by any chance a photo of him with any of these?
