Find Ancestors

Hi All. This is my fiirst post on GR. Does anyone know anything of James Cowherd 1764-1794 from Staveley in Westmorland? His parents, siblings? I know he had a son, William, who in turn had a son, Thomas C. Cowherd, who emigrated to Canada and became an assistant to Alexander Graham Bell.
I'm trying to find out if there is a connection between this branch and my own, which also comes from the same area. I'm convinced there is, but can't find anything concrete at all. Apart from them coming from the same area, the same names are used for both sets of ancestors and the surname spelling is the same.

The only thing I can suggest is looking on Family Search. Just put in surname Cowherd and place of birth Westmorland and see what comes up. There are a lot with this surname at Underbarrow Westmorland. Underbarrow is not that far from Staveley

You do know that Westmorland no longer exists but now part of Cumbria.

I was given the birthdate and place in correspondence from someone in Canada. I have also come across it again today on ancestry.

Sylvia, I've tried the northofthesands.org.uk site and haven't had any luck. Couldn't find anywhere to sign in and no information on Cowherd/Coward. There doesn't seem to be any way of doing any searching once the initial surname search has been done. Am I using the site correctly?

Thanks Ann. I've come across some of that information before but that fills in a lot of gaps. I still cant' get anywhere with William's ( m Mary Cooper) father b1769 d1794. I've tried ancestry, GR, google, lan-opc.org with no luck. It's as if he just popped up out of nowhere! It must be possible to find his father and or siblings, somehow?

I haven't used that site for a couple of years ........... OH's father's family comes from Westmorland, and I was working on them when I found that site.

I can find things by entering "my" surnames in to Surnames on the top row ........ but that is it!!!

Thanks for trying. There does seem to be a problem with the site. Maybe it iis not kept up any more! I put my surname in and just a couple of entries come up. They seem to be old entries, as if the site isn't updated or used much.
As you can see from the thread, the descendants of the person I'm looking for emigrated to Brantford. Where would I look for information on that side - emigration records, etc? Maybe that won't be of much use though, as the person is too far back for his details to be required.
Any other suggestions?
