Find Ancestors

I am trying to confirm the actual birth of a Robert Dick born c1875/1876. I have found Robert on the 1881 census and 1891 censuses for Scotland. He is the son of Robert Dick and Jane Young who were married on 18/12/1874 in Bothwell in Lanarkshire, the family were farmers in the Holytown area of Lanarkshire, Scotland.

On Scotlands People I have managed to track down his parents marriage, the births of their other children, and details of their ancestors, but I cannot find any birth details for Robert.

Any suggestions?

maybe he was born before the parents married so was registered under mums maiden name

If you dont have his birth cert how do you know its the right Robert Dick. There are several with the same name born around the similar birth years

It is definitely not that Irish one, also I have had a look for him under his mothers name but no joy with that.

Yes, that's the family in 1881 and 1891, it's just Robert the son I have a problem with.

James, I think what Shirley was asking is how you got back to this Robert and how you know which one is the right one - as she says, there are quite a few. I assume you have some other info, such as parents' names from his marriage cert for example?

I have no information regarding a marriage for Robert Dick born c1875/1876, the marriage details I have are for his parents Robert Dick and Jane Young who were married on 18/12/1874 in Bothwell in Lanarkshire and I confirmed that marriage on Scotlands People.

The only information I have for Robert Dick born c1875/1876 is that from the 1891 and 1891 census returns on whic he appears along with his siblings whose births I have also confirmed on Scotlands People.

Problem now solved, when Gins said she had found 19 births on SP I redefined my search and found his Birth Certificate, he was born on 13/05/1875.

1875 DICK ROBERT M BOTHWELL /LANARK 625/01

The image of the Birth Certificate confirms his parents as Robert Dick and Jane Young so it is the correct person.

Mistake I made was that as all the other children were born in Holytown, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and that was also where his parents resided, I searched to narrowly just using Holytown. After what Gins said I changed the place of birth to Bothwell in Lanarkshire which was the parish that used to cover Holytown and there it was.

Always amazed how sharing a problem throws light on finding the solution, so many thanks to everyone, keep up the excellent work.
