Too true Mike!

Looked for a divorce but no sign. (I know people think divorce was beyond the reach of ordinary folk back then but there were lawyers who handled the cases on an "in forma pauperis" basis).

She wouldn't be the first to marry bigamously under her maiden name.

Re: the trees and marriages on Ancestry that Mike refers to - there is a copy of the marriage certificate to George Carter in 1913.

Henrietta Elizabeth Kerr is referred to as a spinster and her father is listed as William Henry Kerr (deceased) - Oil Cloth dealer.

When she marries William Turner Devine (as Henrietta Elizabeth Carter, widow) on 26 Dec 1917 the father's details are exactly the same as the 1913 marriage.

Looking at census and baptisms William Henry Kerr's occupation varies between general dealer, lithographic printer, auctioneer so I'd say Oil Cloth dealer fits right in.

Mike

That might explain why I have not found her death in the name of Stratton

A big if but if this is the son then there is this record

Make of this what you will.

One tree has Henrietta marrying twice more.
However, the 2nd marriage is in the name of Kerr not Stratton so not sure it's the same lady.

Marriage to George Carter 13 Sept 1913
Sculcoates Register Office, Hull

Marriage to William Turner Devine 26 Dec 1917
Sculcoates Register Office, Hull

I also suspect that Thomas Stratton and Thomas Herbert Stratton are 2 different people

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 28 Feb 2013 21:03

Thomas James Stratton appeared to be a baker up to his death so it's extremely unlikely that he would be the nightwatchman on the 1903 marriage.

I think Phyllis needs to clarify his background and who he really is in order to find out what became of him.

GlitterBaby Report 28 Feb 2013 20:57

That tree on Ancestry also claims there is another son William Henry b 1908 and dies in 1974

James Thomas dies in 1907

I think Thomas Herbert might be someone else:

Strange tree on Ancestry has the mother of Catherine as Henrietta but does not show father

Gives that Henrietta dies in 1946 in Hull
