I cannot find him in 1881. I have his wedding certificate from 1883 which gives his fathers name as George Thomas (deceased)

I have a census record from 1871 with Jane Thomas widow and two sons George and Alfred
lodging in Back street Swansea , which is possible ,and a record for a Jane Thomas with her sister in 1881 but no trace of George.

just adding this . the wedding was two years after the birth of William ,and there was also an older child Alfred John Thomas . born in 1879 , George was a step-father to these two.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?

Could be. The wedding was in October 1883 and it says that George's father was deceased . I will try to check a deaths record between the census and the wedding .

There is a possible death for the George Thomas (Head of household) in Gritty's 1871 census, so a good possibility.

The wedding was in Bridgend register office . It just give the address as Oldcastle Bridgend for both bride and groom . Witnesses were Henry Lewis and Annie Thomas , ,who I know was the brides sister

Yes Margaret was Alfred John's mother they lived in Oldcastle but Alfred John was brought up by his grandmother . He was George's stepson . (before Margaret married George )

Alfred John was baptised as Alfred John Thomas at three months old ,but his birth certificate Alfred John Huxtable
his mother 's maiden name was also Thomas .before she married George Thomas

His birth certificate says 4th February . has baptism says 22nd May . I don't know when he celebrated .
His brother William Henry was born 10th March 1881

It looks like George the son married a Margaret and his father also married a Margarert or Margaretta

If you look for Margaret's parents .there is another problem if I have the correct censuses . in 1881 her father is 80 her mother is 50
in1871 father is 67 mother is 39 and in 1861 father is 40 Mother is 30 so not much chance of finding B M D certificates . if they go back that far

If it's not resolved I'll try and take at look at this tomorrow afternoon- I think it might take a while :-)
