The pre-WW1 b.certs for several Canadian provinces are free on-line, as well as the full service records of half the 699999 WW1 soldiers (plus the attestation papers of 95% of rest). Also the Canadian 1901 census gives d.o.b. (the 1911 just gives month of birth), so I've seen a lot of d.o.b's, and it's not unusual for the year of birth to disagree, but the birthdays rarely do. |

Sylvia - My mum never had a b.cert until she went to work aged 14. Apparently she needed one for some purpose (maybe to buy stamps - I don't know). Anyway, since one was required under some Act or other, she got to buy a cheap one that only cost 6d instead of the standard 2/6 (or whatever). This b.cert said "only valid for the purposes of the Act", but of course it was a valid b.cert. |

I have made many mistakes in the past by assuming, so I am hoping the marriage cert will help confirm age (roughly) but more importantly fathers name. My mum knows nothing about her fathers family, she can't remember any aunts or uncles. Only that Frederick Ricketts drove a truck for Whitbreads Brewery near Old St, EC1, London in the 30's and 40's. The only pic I have is of Fred with his Whitbreads truck. |

Just got the copy of marriage cert for Frederick Ricketts and Elisabeth Alice Elliott on the 12 April 1930, Frederick was aged 22, address for both of them is 39 Scrutton Street,EC1. Writing is really bad but pretty sure his fathers name is Albert Ricketts, Occ: Painter. Witnesses looks like William Goswell and Sarah Ann Elliott. |

My mum was born at 39 Scrutton St in 1933, will ask her about Ellen Pettitt, in 1911 census Ellen was living in shoreditch with Albert Pettitt and kids Albert, Alice and Stanley. Could someone look up the address for this family in 1911? |

If you would like a second opinion on the writing on that cert Nicola, I would be happy to take a look. |

How can this be so difficult?? a fairly uncommon surname and have death and marriage certs and know birth was between 1907 and 1910 and father's name and occupation but still can't find anything. can't even find the witness William Goswell, hoping that someone else viewing the marriage cert will help. Thanks Dea for offering to look at it. I have scanned it ready to send. |

Was thinking that usually in theses cases (as we have found many a time!) some little thing will crop up, that will be the key that opens it up... |
