I don't think the older children are Samuel's. Although Sarah used her maiden surname when she married him, she had been married before. |

That explains it all good work rootsgatherer,on the marriage to Samuel Wallis she is down as a spinster wonder why she did that instead of say she was a widow. |

Sometimes women claimed to be a spinster if the first husband was still alive and they couldn't afford a divorce but in Sarah's case William seems to have died. Two of my great grandfathers claimed that they were bachelors when they married for a second time but, in fact, both were widowers with a child from their first marriages. Perhaps it was the way the registrar asked the question. |

Firstly, yes I think you have the correct birth for William. Perhaps Samuel registered his birth and gave Sarah's previous married name (Mellors) as her maiden surname rather than Mottershaw. |
