Chris Ho :) Report 10 Aug 2017 13:32

No idea barbara!, a lot of names, and a lot of ???, lol...

No other Birth under Smart 1917 Tendring District.

Chris :)

(maybe she went into state confusion after Death of her Mother 1912, if it is her!)

barbara Report 10 Aug 2017 13:21

Another coincidence - Roland had a daughter who he named Priscilla !!!! If it is Caroline Priscilla as in newspaper article where does Winifred come from and why did Ena put John Smith deceased on her marriage certificate ?

barbara Report 10 Aug 2017 12:56

Brilliant. Thanks everyone. Some of the most recent events are known to us and the Croughton area Smarts I had found but discounted. The article concerning maintenance is new to us though. Will digest all your information and see what happens. The 1939 info is definitely Ena and stepfather. We know Roland was in Lincolnshire just after WWIi until his death after marrying aunt Helen in Palestine. Sorry error re Frederick George marriage certificate just gives Frederick. Ena Frances was born at Heath House Tendring which we think was a Workhouse. Thanks again.

Chris Ho :) Report 10 Aug 2017 12:49

(well looks to be her, it started with an idea to look for a John Smart with wife Caroline on Census, and that followed, then putting caroline smart croughton on newspaper search)

No idea on name Grant though...

(Essex Record Office might have more perhaps, Admission?, below from google)

www.workhouses.org.uk/Tendring, Essex

Tendring Poor Law Union was formed on 16th November 1835. ....

Chris, that looks really good! Excellent sleuthing from you. Certainly explains the name Graham being used. Well done!

Wow Chris! That newspaper article ties it all up nicely.

Correct date and place of birth for the child. And explains why she used the surname Graham on the other article.

Fabulous work

If that date of birth for Frederich Smith is correct, then registered June quarter 1870.

There is a Frederick George Smith born in June quarter 1870, in Tendring.....

Births Jun 1870
Smith Frederick George Tendring 4a 277

SMITH, FREDERICK GEORGE MANN
GRO Reference: 1870 J Quarter in TENDRING Volume 04A Page 277

but cannot see suitable marriage of parents with Henry Smith marrying Miss Mann.

Added:
More likely a Robert Smith and Ann Mann as his parents, so wrong man.

If that's Frederick on the 1939, then this looks to be his death:

Name: Frederick Smith
Death Age: 74
Birth Date: abt 1870
Registration Date: Dec 1944
Registration district: Welton
Inferred County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a Page: 576

Where does his middle name George come from:

No initial on marriage or death index:

Marriage:
Grant Winifred C Smith Lichfield 6b 668
Smith Frederick Grant Lichfield 6b 668
-------------------------------

Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

What was the address on Winifred's death certificate? Was it a hospital?

Yes I believe this is Ena my mother in law living with her stepfather. It is understood that she also had a stepmother. Will try to find a record of Frederick's second marriage and possible death of that wife. Also her stepbrother Roland was believed to have come to Lincolnshire too. Thank you.

Chris :)

barbara

barbara Report 9 Aug 2017 19:46

That's ok. We have the death certificate and are certain it is Ena Frances mother. The cause of death ties in with her having had a daughter born in 1923 who was then given up for adoption - birth name Frances May Smith. It is so frustrating that we cannot find Winifred's parents. Family information that comes from a younger sibling of my husband's says that as a child she was told by Ena that Winifred came from the Pyrenees but another source mentions the Channel Islands. The search goes on.
