Dear All,

Thanks so much for all this help.

It looks as if AustinQ has found the death for James PATON c1833, i.e. 23 Nov 1901 in Dalrymple. AustinQ - do you know how I can access the will & testment?

ArgylGran - thanks for the birth registrations - I know he was born 8 Feb 1862, so indeed one of those registrations must be his and of course would confim his parents.

Maylon & Maddie - the Annie PATON deaths in 1913/1914 you both found might be for James PATON's daughter rather than his wife. His wife died prior to his own death, i.e. before 23 Nov 1901.

Thanks again to all.

I think EC in 1881 stands for Educational College.

Hello Rebecca, James died intestate (without a Will).

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 14 Jul 2019 13:03

ArgyllGran - yes, that's James PATON's birth - parents William PATON and Elizabeth MACKINLAY. Thanks!

Thanks AustinQ - now I understand the meaning of 'intestate' - we live and learn!

Thanks ArgyllGran for the EC definition - would make sense.

Re James's intestacy -
there's an original document viewable on Scotlands People at a cost of 10 credits.

Register on SP (free); log in; click on "Search our records".
Click on "Search for people"
Click on "Legal records"
Click on "Wills and testaments"
Enter search terms: Paton, James, 1902-1902.
Click "Search".

James's record is the first on the list. At the right of the screen you'll see "View image / Buy Credits"
Click on that and buy a minimum of 30 credits for £7.50.

Then you'll see a link to return to the record you were looking at.

You may have to wait a minute or two for the number of credits to appear at the top right corner of the page, just below your name.
Then click on the "View image" box. You can view and/or print the image of the original document.

Even though he didn't leave a Will, his assets (if any) would have been passed on to somebody - via whoever was appointed executor by the court.
