I don't hold out much hope of finding a connection but wonder if someone can point me in a direction.
The above person, my 4th great Grandfather I have put down as b abt 1740 and death abt 1783 probably Leith Scotland. I can go no further back than him but he married Elizabeth Forrester. Maybe he is the Torrop that came from Sweden as an old family tree says and i have Sweden in my DNA ( as have many people I know)
They had 3 sons and 2 daughters one was James Torrop b 1767 and died 1870 again Leith who married Mary Boswell and had 2 sons and 1 daughter, daughter died aged 2.
James Torrop died early leaving the 2 sons ages 7 and 5 James Smith Torrop ( my 2nd great grandfather)and Christoper Torrop.
I found a piece in the newspaper regarding them and connecting them to a General Spens of Rutherglen saying that General Spens was a near kinsman and guardian of these boys. I cannot find any connection.
I would appreciate any help and guidance. I know that Scotlands people is a pay to view and have searched the site with no luck. I have started 2 Spens trees and have my main tree on Ancestry.
Many thanks
Margaret

Oh yes sorry forgot to mention that. Felt I was rambling. James Spens Torrop was my great Grandfather and my granny was Margaret Spens and her neice had Spens. Bet they had no idea why.

Have you got all your possible dates right, eg. was James 103 when he died? Or you ? then you say he died early leaving 2 sons

The marriage you refer to -

Surname Forename Spouse Name Date Parish Number Ref Parish Image View
TORROP JAMES MARY BOSWALL/FR4570 (FR4570) 18/07/1804 685/3 170 7 Canongate

Is this the James and Christopher whose Father you say died early?

Thanks for the info. Can anyone get info before Christopher B abt 1740?
Would anyone know regarding where guardianship papers would be kept?

Margaret

Margaret Report 4 Aug 2019 11:46

Oops, James died 1815. Sorry

Can't even find Christopher's baptism, Margaret, never mind anything about his parents!

Margaret

Margaret Report 4 Aug 2019 12:15

No it's very frustrating. Maybe he is the Torrop who came from Sweden.

Re guardianship - I have no idea.

Contact the National Records of Scotland - they may be able to advise:

Fraser's Magazine for Town and Country

Christopher Torrop (a rugged name enough!), editor of the Edinburgh Evening Post, a youth of considerable promise, is the son of a tinsmith, and of Swedish extraction.
