Arfermo Report 18 Feb 2020 12:47

Hello--My uncle Alex, who had been a British soldier, returned to England from WW1, in France , in the early 1920's, with a French wife ,Helene Marie ( Glorieux,) and two children. Alexander Auguste & daughter Ninette. My uncle, born in 1889, in Birmingham, returned to that city. Last known to be living there in the 1930's. After 20 yrs, I cannot find him, his wife or children, in any indices, EXCEPT--the son Alexander Auguste Croft, who I recently discovered , left London for Bombay India, on the P&O liner ''Chusan'' 11/9/1950 aged 30. Birmingham address shown. on boarding paper's. AND, his mother , Helene Marie Glorieux , buried, with her maiden name, in Lille France, dated 1966. age 83. NO other documentation for my Uncle Alexander Alfred Croft , or, the daughter Ninette, Nothing. ANY help at all would be very welcome--thank you, Arfermo.

No records are kept of travel to Europe, so, if the family went there at any time, you will not be able to trace their movements

As the wife died there, one would imagine that's what happened

French records are not kept on a national basis - you have to look in the relevant area

the 1935 and 1939 already posted show him with Helen Marie Joseph Croft. Any children would have been too young to show.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Feb 2020 14:29

Aha!

107 Golden Hillock Road is the address for Alexander Augustus when he left the UK in 1950.

And Alexander Augustus is a telephonist - so that will be him in the Post Office 1948 record.

So did his father remarry, to a Bridget ??

ADDED:
I can't see any such marriage in England/Wales.

Alfred and Bridget are also together in 1945, at 107 Golden Hillock Road.

Don't know if Helena M is Alexander's wife or his daughter.
If his wife, who is Bridget ??

Or was Ninette officially Helena, perhaps?
