I agree with Alviegal in having doubts about the 1944 death - the man's age is several years "out" from what your grandfather's would have been, Kathleen, although as already said, it all depends on what the informant believed to be true.

Are you certain about Frederick G's death in 1944? Apologies if you are but if not I think it is more likely to be this man. In 1939 his birth date is 23 Feb 1878.

and here's the 1911 for Dorothy. They did travel about quite a bit! Pretty sure Bessie Florence is their sister so they should be described as sister in laws not nieces to Ambrose.

The 1939 register entries as posted by alviegal were ones I'd also noted, but was busy posting the Army records.
The DOB for Frederick does match that in his Army records and Dorothy's would fit an age of 27y 2m in 1921.
Could this therefore be Dorothy's Death registration-

Rowton Houses was a chain of hostels built in London, England, by the Victorian philanthropist Lord Rowton to provide decent accommodation for working men in place of the squalid lodging houses of the time.
George Orwell, in his 1933 book Down and Out in Paris and London, wrote about lodging houses:
The best are the Rowton Houses, where the charge is a shilling, for which you get a cubicle to yourself, and the use of excellent bathrooms. You can also pay half a crown for a 'special', which is practically hotel accommodation. The Rowton Houses are splendid buildings, and the only objection to them is the strict discipline, with rules against cooking, card playing, etc.[1]

This is the birth of the Frederick in the 1891 census posted above by Safc:
WARD, FREDERICK GEORGE mmn JOLLIFFE GRO Reference: 1885 M Quarter in KENSINGTON Volume 01A Page 127
That's too early to be Kathleen's grandfather. He (K's grandfather) was 35 years 10 months on 19 June 1921 (census date), therefore born about August/Sept 1885. He was 30 years 3 months on 8/12/1915, again making his birth approx Sept 1885.
