Her birth may not have been registered. No penalties until 1875.

I know the best thing to do would be to apply for a birth certificate but Mary Ann Garnett is such a common name I might apply for the wrong one so I’ve put it on hold for the moment although I do like a challenge. I appreciate all the help received.

It doesn't prove she's YOUR Mary Ann, of course - though yours did have a daughter named Ellen.
Could be after Ellen/Eleanor Eccles, or after Agnes's mother Eleanor - but it's a common name.

In 1861 she was in Kirkby Lonsdale, as servant to the Atkinson family.
Her 12-yr-old illegitimate son Isaac (baptised 12 Aug 1849) was also a servant in that household. in 1861.

(In 1851, baby Isaac was an "other relative" with James and Ellenor (nee Mason) Eggels [ie - Eccles] and their sons, in Lupton, Westmorland.)

Thank you for your advice. I will look further.
Lots of Garnett’s in Westmorland and very prolific. Such a lot of Garnett’s called John, William and Robert. Septimus is certainly a new one.

There are numerous Agnes Garnetts of child-bearing age in Kendal in 1851........the birth cert should have an address, which may prove illuminating, although, obviously it's all conjecture.

William Garnett was not the father of Mary Ann - she claimed that her father’s name was Robert , but that is unlikely to have been true - as per earlier posts on here.

The 1841 seems to be a mishmash of people. All men living together. Maybe in lodgings. Teptomas Atkinson being odd so possibly a wrong spelling. I was hoping that
William would still be living with his parents.

Thank you ArgyllGran. Lillie Fletcher married into the Woan family. Maybe Jessie’s mother was a friend of the family and they were just helping out in a time of need. Families were know to take in friends family.
I’ve looked at all the census you have sent and none of the names are known to me so I’m giving up on Jessie.
