I need some suggestions/advice. I am researching the Finn family. and Augustus Finn at the moment. I have found a birth in 1890 and a baptism in 1892. His mother was Catherine Finn Born 1848 in Swansea. She had an illegitimate son in 1878 in Bristol called George Gould Finn ( on his baptism it says Catherine Finn and George Gold are parents but they never married, he could have already been married .)
0n the 1891 Census Catherine Finn was living with her son George 13 and Augustus (it says 9 but think it is probably 9 months). I couldn't find Augustus after this ,trying everything. However I have now seen a death in Bristol in 1892 of an Augustus Finn Harrington and am wondering if this could be the same child. I know I will have to order the death certificate but was hoping I could find some link with the name Harrington.
Catherine never married and the census was still Catherine Finn. I can't find her in 1881 though although I found her son George in 1881 living with his grandmother.
Any Suggestions? Thanks

There is a death notice in the newspaper for Augustus Finn Harrington, the only and dearly-loved child of Patrick and Catherine Harrington of 8 Great James Street, Bristol, aged 1year 9 months

That address is the same as 1891 census

Just for our info - good job George is the age he's meant to be to find the family on census. Census does say age 9 no 'm' after to indicate months but obviously the family

Thank you all. Thanks grey ghost for the transcript good to see.
So glad she has been found in 1881. So in 1881 she is listed as married then in 1891 and 1901 she is listed as widow. I haven't found a marriage yet. and she is still using the surname Finn so who knows!
Argyll/gran. I looking for the name Harrington and found Patrick on the 1881 census in 3 Froome Buildings age 30 and unmarried so did wonder but as you say can't be proven . A great step forward though. If I have the right Catherine it looks as though she may be in prison 1902 and died 1903!!
Thanks again.

CATHERINE FINN. BORN 1848 SWANSEA
You managed to find her in the 1881 Census which is great.

I have found her in 1851 in tygwnbach with her mother Charlotte, she is 3 then in 1871 at 23 I found her as a boarder at 32 Eugene Street,Bristol
I can't find her in 1861, she would have been 13. I can't find her mother Charlotte Finn either she was born in 1826 in Merthyr Tydfil. I believe in 1861 her father Patrick Finn had died so Charlotte and Catherine could be in Wales still or in Bristol.
Any help would be fantastic thanks

Rose

Rose Report 30 May 2025 18:26

Sorry I have found a Charlotte Finn in 1861 at Wharton Street Cardiff, a monthly nurse , right age and a widow! but no Catherine age 13.
I do apologise but if you can help with Catherine that would be great

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 30 May 2025 18:47

Be flexible about her birth year. If you look at 1881, she was saying she was only 27

Also, look for variants of surname……..see my info about how I found her in 1881.

Have you checked the households of both sets of grandparents?

100% DON’T start a new thread when asking about the same set of people ;-) ;-)

Thanks for the follow up on posting for Catherine Finn 1861. I still haven't found her.
Erika H. I did try searching as you explained when you found her in 1881 but no joy, thanks for the advice though as I did not realise that could be done, so very helpful. and I cancelled the new thread as you said.

I checked Charlotte's parents side and she is not with them but to date I have not established when Patrick Finn was born or who his parents were so can't check that right now. I am awaiting the marriage certificate of Patrick and Charlotte which may help me.
Charlotte had 8 siblings thought that Catherine may be with one of them in 1861 but haven't found her yet. Thanks

Not sure that a Methodist burial 'fits' alongside the Roman Catholic baptism of son George, unless it was only his father who was RC, which may well be the case, as I rather think he was Irish
