Magnus Cheyne 1859-????

Roy Report 1 Jul 2025 03:43

Hi the Cheyne's are my wife's family, and I have not been researching them for several years now. I am looking for Magnus Cheyne of any of his parents or siblings. They were all born in Dunrossness, Shetland, Scotland. Any help would be appreciated however small it may be. I live in New Zealand, so it is not just a case of hopping over to Dunrossness to try to do any research, although we are hoping to go over there next year.

Scottish records are on Scotlands People. I understand you can search for free but must pay for downloads.
You could also take a look at the Shetland Family History Society.

There are a number of the Cheyne family in other members trees - go to Search/ search all embers trees to find them.

If you google Cheyne family history + Shetland you should find a roots web page with a family tree. The citations on this page are very interesting and well worth looking at.

Dates would help…………..

Where have you looked?

FindMyPast has a baptism in 1854 in Walls, Shetland, parents Arthur and Willminna
BUT ,as stated above, look at SP.

FMP has Scottish censuses up to 1901 in addition to many BMD records

Dates? Magnus was born in 1859 as per the heading.

He is on a members tree on here and is listed on the two sites shown.

added for interest. A few years ago a huge y-dna project was started for Shetlanders - this is probably still on going.

Oops…..missed that………holiday mindset!

In that case, he’s on 1861 on FMP with parents Sinclair and Catherine and older sister Isabella

According to the Bayonne website Magnus is also on the 1881 in Northumberland - he was a merchant seaman..

The two site listed have lots of details about the Cheyne families in Shetland. It will take Roy a while to plough through all the info.

All the work has been done on the Rootsweb & Bayonne websites listed above, which is why I said it would take Roy time to go through them.

As a sailor it is not surprising that Magnus can’t always be found - except that he emigrated in 1882. All there for Roy to see.

HE NEVER CAME BACK
A Dunrossness man who passed away in Idaho some months ago, at the ripe old age of 92, had not seen his native isles since emigrating in 1882. He was Mr Magnus Cheyne. and news of his passing comes from his brother William in New Zealand. Deceased was the eldest son of Sinclair and Catherine Cheyne, and his passing leaves only one of their nine children alive, William, who has been in New Zealand since 1912.
In America Mr Magnus Cheyne pursued the hard life of a miner, prospecting for silver, lead, copper and tin. and found some valuable mines in his time. Like others, however, he strove to better himself by floating a company, but with disappointing results. He never married.
His brother, the youngest of the Cheyne family, is over the allotted span and has four children, all whom are married. Grandchildren number eleven. Mr Wm. Cheyne still follows the business of builder which he took up when he emigrated in 1912,
