Sorry, Sinead, I couldn't find an obvious connection with either of the witnesses but there are a lot of Henry Nash / Naishes around. Kate.

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 22:55

Val, I think we already established that, but it looks as though the Edwin who married Rosina is not the Edwin that Sinead is looking for anyway. Kate.

ValT Report 13 Jun 2006 19:58

Hi could Elon/Elam be Rosina's brother thus making him Edwin brother-in -law even though Rosina is dead. Val

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 18:21

Ruth is a widow in 1851, if that is any help. Perhaps if you can find her death registration and get her death certificate you will be lucky enough to find the informant is daughter Caroline Barber. I will see if I can find anything to do with those witnesses later but must get off the computer now! Of course, they could have been 'serial witnesses' anyway. Oh, I don't suppose that Caroline and Samuel named a daughter Ruth, did they? If they did it would strongly suggest her mother was Ruth. Kate.

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 18:12

Sinead, like I said, Caroline is not on the Bristol Baptisms Index 1813-1837. Kate.

Sinead

Sinead Report 13 Jun 2006 18:06

On her marriage certificate it gives her fathersn name as Edwin Salvidge but does not say deceased like it usually does. Witness- Henry Parfitt Henry Nash I have no idea where Mary Ann came from cos I cant remember where I got the info from and cos Caroline was born in 1829 it will have to be a visit to a record office to pull church registers for baptisms for Caroline Salvidge - probably in St Philip and St Jacob where she married. But seeing my health situation that is a touch unlikely! Maybe I will phone the record office and see what they say! Sinead

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 18:06

Okay, I have had a look at the Bristol Baptisms Index 1813-1837 (includes Bedminster) and there is no Caroline Salvidge, nor any children with father Edwin Salvidge. But... there is an Edwin Salvidge marriage in the Bristol Marriages Index 1813-1837. 6/06/1824 St. Paul Portland Square 2f page 96 number 286: Edwin Salvidge married Ruth Marshall. Both 'of this parish'. I think one of those 1841 Carolines was with a Ruth, wasn't she? So it could be that your Edwin died before 1841 (sorry but I don't have Bristol burials). Though what happened to Caroline's baptism, I don't know. Kate.

Does Caroline's marriage cert have anything on it to indicate that her father was alive? A witness 'mark' perhaps? If not, maybe she gave the name for the sake of propriety..........is either of the ones posted for 1841 'your' Caroline? Reg

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 17:36

Sinead, I am so sorry to hear about your stroke. The name Samuel Barber definitely rings a bell which is why I wonder if I looked up Caroline as well? I'll have to look through my old messages and see if I can find out. But anyway, my guess is that 'Edwin Salvidge, labourer' may not be the same Edwin who you have found married to Mary Ann. But even if he is, Mary Ann can't be Caroline's mother since she didn't even marry Edwin until after Caroline married Samuel! So... ummm, I guess we are looking for any other Edwin Salvidge information we can find. Preferably before 1849, and even better, before 1841. If you get the marriage certificate for Edwin Salvidge and Rosina Mitchell you can at least see whether Edwin is down as widower or bachelor on there, which might help in working out whether he is the right Edwin. Oh, and did you say who the witnesses were on Caroline's marriage certificate? Kate.

Hi all, Thanks for the replies - I have not been able to get back till now cos of kids and school stuff! I have as yet not gone through the data but do know. 1849 Caroline Salvidge married Samuel Barber in Bristol and her father is down as Edwin Salvidge, labourer. 1871 Census Edwin Salvidge,1803,Bristol,stWoollos,Monmouthshire Mary Ann , 1804,Middlesex,St Woollos,Monouthshire 1878 July Quarter - they both die (at the same time it has to be some sort of accident) but has a year of birth of about 1813 for both. Kate I have no idea if I asked you to look up a baptism - I had a stroke a while ago that severely affected my memory so have no idea about that. To recap. Edwin Salvidge - born Bristol Mary Ann ? - born Middlesex Caroline Salvidge - born and married and died in Bristol and Bedminster. Edwin and Mary Ann Salvidge both appear in 1871 Wales census and die in 1878! Clear as mud!!! Am going to go through the data you all go through all the data you found and try to make sense of it! Thank you, Sinead xxx

Actually, just before I get off the computer and go to fetch my daughter, I have managed to find out who that 1849 marriage was to: IGI Individual Record FamilySearch? International Genealogical Index v5.0 British Isles Search Results | Download | Pedigree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edwin Salvidge Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: John Phelps Salvidge Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: Harriett Bridget Lovitt Family Marriage: 12 NOV 1849 Bilston, Stafford, England But probably not your Edwin, anyway. And this is the IGI version of Edwin and Rosina's marriage: IGI Individual Record FamilySearch? International Genealogical Index v5.0 British Isles Search Results | Download | Pedigree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDWIN SALVIDGE Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: ROSINA MITCHELL Family Marriage: 22 APR 1841 Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwick, England Anyway, gotta go. Kate.

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 14:50

No, sorry, Sinead, I think we must have gone wrong somewhere but I am not sure where! When you get back, can you please tell me what it says for Caroline's father on her marriage certificate (and who the witnesses were), and whether you have any baptism details for her? Then maybe between us we can figure it out! Kate.

This is the entry from West Midlands BMD marriage index, which shows that Edwin did marry Mary Ann Turner out of all that list on FreeBMD: West Midlands Marriage indexes for the years: 1851 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference SALVIDGE Edwin TURNER Mary A Sedgley, All Saints Dudley 216/007/25 I am trying to find Caroline with Mary Ann on the 1851 now, but not having any luck at the minute. Still, at least you can get that marriage certificate and it should help you. Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 14:27

This looks like Rosina's death: Deaths Jun 1849 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Salvidge Rosina Dudley 18 224 And This could be the marriage to Mary Ann: Marriages Sep 1851 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Allender Henry Dudley 18 375 Bayliss David Dudley 18 375 Bould Maria Dudley 18 375 Bradley Maria Dudley 18 375 Jackson Elizabeth Dudley 18 375 Morris William Dudley 18 375 Salvidge Edwin Dudley 18 375 TURNER Mary Ann Dudley 18 375 So on the 1851 census, Edwin may not be with Mary Ann, but it looks likely that he would be in Dudley. Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 14:24

Ah, it's starting to make sense now! Marriages Jun 1841 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arnold John Birmingham 16 330 BIDDLE Martha Birmingham 16 330 DRAPER Eleanor Birmingham 16 330 Holder Thomas Birmingham 16 330 Mitchell Rosina Birmingham 16 330 RAINBOW John Birmingham 16 330 SALVIDGE Edwin Birmingham 16 330 SORRELL Maria Birmingham 16 330 So Elam was most likely Rosina's brother, and that made Edwin his brother-in-law. Presumably Rosina then died and Edwin remarried, to Mary Ann. I'll see if I can find any of that... Kate.

Kate Report 13 Jun 2006 14:20

Sinead, if you're there, can you just refresh my memory, please? Did I once look through Bedminster baptisms for Caroline Salvidge and draw a blank? I'm just wondering if Edwin was just her stepfather and if she could be baptised under a different surname, given that she isn't with Edwin in 1841. By the way, those 3 in 1841 all have occupation 'hawker', and are listed in this order: Edwn, Rosina, Elone. Kate.

By the way, Elam is down as 'Elon Mitchel' in 1851 on ancestry but Edwin and Mary Ann are not with him. Kate.
