Is anyone able to help me with this. This lady was my great grandmother. All I know is what is on the 1901 census for her. At that time she is living in Woodford, Essex with my grandfather Harry Baldwin. It states her birth place as Warehorne (Warehouse?) Flint. Approximate year of birth is 1870 (but it could be 10 years either way!). Does anyone know of this place? if so, can they look her up for me please. I know nothing of her - I don't know when they married, when she died or even very much about their offspring apart from my grandfather and a family rumour that her youngest two sons were Barnados boys and went to Canada. Thanks.

Was Gates her maiden name? It says birth 1875 in Flintshire, Wales on the 1901 census? Suzanne

These are the only W- parishes in Flintshire on Genuki: Waun / Gwernaffield Whitewell / Iscoyd Whitford / Chwitffordd Worthenbury will have a look for her in previous censuses. nell

Thank you for lookin for this for me. Yes I believe Gates was her maiden name. But unable to find marriage to Harry Baldwin - His name sometimes appears as Henry William or Harry William, believe he was born in Epping, Essex in 1869.

Where did you get surname Gates from? I cannot find a marriage nor find an Ann* Gates born Wales anywhere on previous censuses. nell

The name Gates came from my Grandfather's birth certificate. He was born 5th July 1903 at 1 Alma Cottages, West Grove, Woodford, Essex. States mother as Annie Elizabeth Baldwin formerly Gates. Grandfathers name George Henry Baldwin.

I think you will have to get the marriage cert - if you can find the reference - to find out Annie's father's name and use him to find her on the census before her marriage. nell

The problem is I don't know if they were married and have not been able to find marriage when I've looked before. Also, if they married in or around Woodford, Essex then this area sometimes 'falls between two stalls' for record offices - sometimes Essex, sometimes East of London.

There are relatively few Gates in the indexes for Wales on ancestry, but they all seem to be in Glamorgan or Monmouthshire. nell

I agree with Nell, you really need to find a marriage so we can pinpoint her with her father.....that is if they married *sigh* As the pair were fond of the name George I wonder if this is s of help: Thomas Fulegar abt 1856 Woodchurch, Kent, England Lodger St Mary Virgin in Marsh Kent Ann Gates abt 1859 Lydd, Kent, England Wife St Mary Virgin in Marsh Kent >>>>> Ann Elizabeth Gates abt 1879 New Romney, Kent, England Daughter St Mary Virgin in Marsh Kent >>>> George Gates abt 1852 St Marys, Kent, England Head St Mary Virgin in Marsh Kent George J. Gates St Marys, Kent, England Son St Mary Virgin in Marsh Kent Joseph Whitehead abt 1854 New Church, Kent, England Lodger St Mary Virgin in Marsh Kent Source information: RG11/1015 Registration district: Romney Marsh Sub registration district: New Romney ED, institution, or vessel: 5a Folio: 48 Page: 6 (click to see others on page) GSU Number: 1341241

If it is Warehorne in Kent then it comes under DOVER for the registration district :))

Couldnt find a marriage but these births look interesting???? No Surname Forename1 Forename2 Forename3 Mothers maiden name District Page No Event Quarter Year 1 Baldwin Alfred J (Gates) Epping.4a 945 Birth 2 1912 2 Baldwin Victor J (Gates) Epping.4a 985 Birth 2 1914 and this death???? No Surname Forename1 Forename2 Forename3 AAD District Page No Event Quarter Year 1 Baldwin Annie E 46 Epping.4a 373 Death 2 1920 If this is her death then the boys would be very young and so may have gone to Canada as Barnardo boys.

Suzanne Report 7 Jun 2006 20:58

P.S. I live in South Woodford, the street West Grove is a bit too far into Woodford to be part of what was London so the district etc should be within the Essex region.

Threes lots of sites about Barnardo boys in Canada if your interested. Theres one with a picture c1922 about the time your rellie would have gone I think...you never know one of them may be yours????? http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/legacy/chap-2b.html If your interested in finding info on them as Home Children unfortuantely the online database of Home Children only goes upto 1916, you can make enquiries from here: http://www.)collectionscanada.ca/services/005-2021-e.php take out bracket after full stop.

Re-reading your thread you say Annie is your GREAT grandmother and Harry is your Grandfather???? Did you mean this or are they both your grandparents? or great grandparents? Suzanne

Looking at the 1901 image, the birth county could easily be Kent. There is certainly no mention of Wales on the census..........that bit has been added by the Ancestry transcriber. Reg

Thank you everyone for your help on this. Just to recap, Henry William Baldwin b. c.1869 Epping, Essex - my great grandfather. His Wife (?) Annie Elizabeth Gates b. c 1875 Warehorne, Flint (Now think this might be Kent) - my great grandmother. My grandfather, George Henry Baldwin b. 1903. I did contact Barnardos about my uncles - believe they were Ernest and Mick - who went to Canada, but they will only provide information if I am the only/last surviving relative. I can't say that I am - as I expect they have family in Canada. Any ideas how to put out a request in Canada for connections. The births and deaths found by Suzanne look really promising - I try and get certificates. Thanks again.
