its not a case of ''if you dare...'' records from ireland are thin on the ground on the internet, so you may have to do that one ''on foot'' as it were yourself

Venetia Report 6 Mar 2006 22:23

well thanks to all you out there for looking for the oatleys for me, on of the children born to victor and grace was margaret who was my husbands mother and he is one of ten his father is one of 15 so if anyone fancies a challenge they can look up the blacks of belfast for me if you dare. i wouldnt know where to begin but thanks to you all we now have a really good oatley family tree going, the reason we have been unable to do this ourselves is davids parents died very young and within a year of each other, so all contacts were severed big thank you to you all for your time and effort venny

Okay, that's enough for now, but Venetia, you must have a look at IOW BMD because you will find loads and loads of stuff on there. Kate.

And this is Nelson's full name, from his birth registration: OATLEY, Nelson, Victor 1914 HENDEY Cowes C55/E111 Looks like Douglas was his brother: OATLEY, Douglas, Bernard 1913 HENDEY Cowes C53/E472 This could be Grace: ABBOTT, Grace 1915 PHILLIPS Godshill G38/E52 And this could be Kathleen (if so, then not Grace's sister, at least not her full sister): ABBOTT, Kathleen 1911 SIBBICK Godshill G37/E7 Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 14 Feb 2006 10:21

And these are the Oatley / Abbott marriages, again from IOW BMD: Bride & Groom Date Place Reference ABBOTT, Kathleen 1932 Register Office or Nonconformist / RC Church RO83/189 OATLEY, Douglas, B ABBOTT, Grace 1933 Register Office or Nonconformist / RC Church RO84/145 OATLEY, Nelson, V Before 1898 Nonconformist and Roman Catholic churches were not licensed to conduct marriages without the presence of the Registrar. After 1898 some Nonconformist Churches remained unlicensed. The exact place of these marriages is not known and marked above as 'Register Office or Nonconformist / RC Church' Kate.

Kate Report 14 Feb 2006 10:18

Here they are from 1932 onwards (thanks to IOW BMD): OATLEY, Frederick, Arthur, James 1932 ABBOTT Calbourne Ca32/E275 OATLEY, Albert, Douglas, William 1932 ABBOTT Calbourne Ca32/E276 OATLEY, Margaret, Joyce 1934 ABBOTT Godshill G42/E248 OATLEY, John, Edward 1935 ABBOTT Calbourne Ca33/E82 OATLEY, Kathleen, Grace 1935 ABBOTT Calbourne Ca33/E123 OATLEY, Reginald, Peter 1936 ABBOTT Newport N75/E256 OATLEY, Elizabeth, Ann 1937 ABBOTT Newport N75/E452 OATLEY, Rita, May 1938 ABBOTT Newport N76/E392 OATLEY, Clifford, George 1939 ABBOTT Newport N77/E169 OATLEY, Muriel, Kathleen 1940 ABBOTT Newport N78/E64 OATLEY, Leonard, Victor 1940 ABBOTT Sandown/Shanklin SS3/E16 OATLEY, George, William, James 1941 ABBOTT Sandown/Shanklin SS3/E238 OATLEY, Lawrence, Bernard 1941 ABBOTT Newport N79/E58 OATLEY, Robert, Martin 1943 ABBOTT Ventnor V2/E282 OATLEY, Leslie, Frederick, Charles 1943 ABBOTT Newport N80/E387 I don't know why they put up commas between the names but just ignore the commas, for example 'OATLEY Muriel, Kathleen' just means her name was 'Muriel Kathleen Oatley'. It looks very much as though there were at least two Oatley / Abbott families producing children on the IOW at the time, so I'm not sure how you are going to untangle which ones belong to your couple without ordering a lot of birth certificates! Still, you can specify what the parents' names should be when you order. The reference numbers above are the ones you would need to order from IOW BMD, not the GRO reference numbers which you would have to get from the GRO indexes if you want to order from the GRO. Of course, they may have had more children after 1944, in which case it is back to the GRO indexes! Well, at least the above is a start, and if anybody wants to trawl through the GRO indexes start at 1945. Kate.

AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! HappyGenesReunited error when I try to send her a message!!!! If anybody else can do it, please send her a message to look at this thread. In the meantime, I will copy and paste from IOW BMD after all... Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 14 Feb 2006 10:08

So don't bother searching ancestry anybody! I'll send a message to Venetia to tell her to look at this thread for info on how to do the search herself very easily. She really needs to look at the IOW site because there will very likely be lots of other stuff on there that will help her as well as the births she asked for, which is why I am not going to copy and paste them. Kate.

Kate Report 14 Feb 2006 10:06

Luckily, the Isle of Wight BMD (and more!) site is fantastic, at http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs (.) c o (.) uk/ remove brackets and spaces and births go up to 1944 at the moment If you do a search on Oatley births from 1933 to 1944 and look for the ones with 'Abbott' in 'other surname' you will see lots. Looks as though they may have had twins in 1935? Let me know if you have any trouble using the site (to search the BMD indexes, just click on 'BMD Index in Progress' on the left of the screen. Have fun! Kate.

Liz - Venitia may or may not ever come back, she has been on a couple of times, but in the evenings. Just thought if anyone was at a loose end and wanted something to do , the info was there. Might be a good idea to add the years searched and eliminated if anyone does though!!
