Without knowing what her name was, no-one will be able to find her on 1841 census. You do need to find the marriage. Reg

hi again, i jsut wanted to tell you all that i have been looking at my research and i found that William and Lavinia Whittingham were living together in the 1851 census, so i think that to find out her maiden name i will have to look at the 1841 census. If anyone can do this for me then i would really appreciate it. Regards Paul

i looked on ancestry for the marriage i didnt know where else to look?

Paul, The parish registers for the Medway area of NW Kent are available FREE on http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ its not indexed so a bit of a pain to use but well worth it if you stick at it. I have found there's a lot of Kent not covered by the IGI, and I've found loads of mine by looking at cityark.

As Lavinia was born c1821, the best you can hope for, once you know her maiden surname is to find the baptism on Parish records, or, if you're lucky, the IGI Reg

i do have Lavinia's death certificate but it doesnt say her maiden name on there and i can find a birth of marriage anywhere.
