Possible demise of Hepzibah's mother (can't find father's) Deaths Dec 1849 Shepherd Elizabeth Lexden &c vol12 page 96 Shepherd Elizabeth Lexden &c vol12 page 95 Ozi Bird Well done, I think you have cracked it. Possible that surname was mispronounced/misheard, or just plain lazy and slurred the 'd' out. Don't get me started on sloppy pronounciations!!! |

Looking in 1871 there is this entry, I know name is wrong, but perhaps lady of house didn't like name Fanny? Kate Sadler abt 1853 Bughthingaea, Essex, England Servant St Anne Limehouse London (Brightlingsea on image) Ok I got it wrong (so what's new, I hear you cry!!!) Looks like that is her older sister Catherine in 1861 census. |

Thanks for all of this- major growth of tree. However, I think I still have one problem - have not found the birth of Fanny E Sadler. Until then I do know that Heph jnr, Catherine and Fanny are all grandaughters of the same person but I can't be certain that they are sisters - looks like a search of 1837 this weekend is in order - i must get the evidence!! - and I still haven't got them in 71 - somewhere in Brightlingsea there's a black hole or an aliien spaceship! OK - Story to date: Hep Sheeperdborn 1829 married unknown Sadler before 1852, had 3 children - Catherine, Fanny E and Hep jnr, then Hep Snr married Curtis in 1861 and had more children. Hep's parents John and Elizabeth Sheeperd. Can't find Sheeperd/Sadler marriage, cant find daughters in 1871, Fanny E reappears at 75 marriage. Tired and going to bed - will come back to this in the morning to see if the resident geniusses have a solution to the missing bits. Thanks again Peter related to almost everyone in brightlingsea!! |

No - I have none of them in 71 - tracked Fanny back from BMD marriages with a bit of inspired guesswork. Suspect they were either missed or very mistranscribed..... P |

Going on her name, there is this entry in 1851, she is a housekeeper. Eliza Gardner abt 1835 Brightlingsea, Essex, England Visitor Brightlingsea Essex David Shepherd abt 1839 Brightlingsea, Essex, England Son Brightlingsea Essex >>Hepzibah E Shepherd abt 1830 Brightlingsea, Essex, England Head Brightlingsea Essex Luke Shepherd abt 1836 Brightlingsea, Essex, England Son The image does indeed say son, but brother would be more appropriate!! Can't find a marriage on Ancestry. |

No males in household in 1861. Given the age of the children, it's possible Hepzibah married between 1851-1861. On image, she is shown as a widow. |

Three more questions please - are there any males in the house (whose daughter is Hephzebah in the 1861)? Can Hephzibah be found in 1851 (before children are born)? Where are they in 1871? Peter |
