My GGGrandparents were born in Ireland, not yet traced a marriage but all children born in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire. I have the family in 51/61 and 71. This is 1871 living at 12 Curzon Road, Ashton under Lyne: Ann McGladdery abt 1843 Hurst, Lancashire, England Daughter Ashton under Lyne Lancashire James McGladdery abt 1812 Ireland Head Ashton under Lyne Lancashire Jane McGladdery abt 1838 Hurst, Lancashire, England Daughter Ashton under Lyne Lancashire John McGladdery abt 1861 Hurst, Lancashire, England Grandson Ashton under Lyne Lancashire Mary McGladdery abt 1811 Ireland Wife Ashton under Lyne James died in 1873 at the same address. After that, Mary vanishes along with the 2 daughters. I can't find deaths or marriages although the family changed the spelling of the surname constantly...Gladrey/Gladney/Gladsey/Glathers/Glathery/Gladthery. Take your pick! I know there's a chance that Mary and the daughters returned to Ireland after James died but would appreciate a fresh set of eyes (or six!) to see whether anything turns up for them in later years. Maybe someone else can see something I've missed Thanks Lou |

lol Nell Maybe they went on a ship to Ireland with this lot! Hi Pat Have trawled the parish registers at the local RO (figuring it would be easier and cheaper than trying all these varying name spellings on family relatives) but can't find anything for her or the daughters |

Lou Probobally clutching at straws here, the closest I can find for a Ann and James Bain entry is the following in 1881: Not sure what's going on with American daughter. Image could read Baines or Bainer! James is a stripper and grinder, Ann is a Weaver. View Record Ann Baines abt 1844 Ashton, Lancashire, England Wife 92 Church St Botany, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England View Record James Baines abt 1841 Kildare, Ireland Head 92 Church St Botany, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England View Record Mary Baines abt 1873 Fall River, America Daughter 92 Church St Botany, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England RG11/4037 Registration district: Ashton Under Lyne Sub-registration district: Ashton Town ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Folio: 37 Page: 17 Lib:)) |

Lib James and Mary's eldest son (my gggrandfather) was BORN on Botany Street, Ashton under Lyne. Oh lordy...don't tell me they all emigrated to America after James died but some came back......! Pauline I spotted that one earlier but didn't want to get too excited cos there's a lot of McGladdery's in Cumbria in the earlier census so there may be more than one Jane. Shall have to try and find her and whichever chap she married in 1901 Here they are...Jane married John Styler and was born in 1877 in Maryport, Cumberland, so not my Jane unfortunately Thanks both of you Lou |

Sorry Lou Ive no idea, perhaps a 'google will help' Can you elliminate this for Mary 1811, Im posting it just in case it means anything! Hi Lib Yep, can eliminate that one. Son James was born 1840 in Ashton under Lyne and if my memory serves me correctly is on later census with a child but no wife! I'd have to drag out the notes to be more definite Lou |
