Kath - GEDCOM is a standard file format for family tree programs. If you want to get one from your GR tree, click on 'Import/Export Tree' on the left and choose export. Unfortunately it usually takes several attempts before it actually gives you a file! Kate. |

First of all I will say that I too have learnt the hard way and lost files through a computer crash. Thankfully not since I've been doing my tree. We think it was a virus, so make sure anti-virus and firewall are in place, £40 a year is cheaper than doing all that research again. There are so many ways to back up data that there really is no excuse, writeable CD; memory stick; website; office computer; etc. If all else fails, if you have a good friend on here why not exchange e-mail addresses and swap files say once a week or so? |

Hi all Just came across this thread and wondered if you knew that there are people out there who can retrieve data from crashed hard drives. It's not 100% guaranteed, but nearly. The only drawback is that it can be expensive, depending on the cause of the crash. If you Google 'data recovery' or 'hard drive retrieval' there are a good number of services on offer. Make sure you click 'search pages in the UK' before you start the search. I know it's a last resort but it may be worth it rather than repeating all your previous hard work. Good luck and regards Ron |

Hi Zoe, Just seen this thread and know just how you feel. My hard drive crashed last week and I lost everything except the bare bones of my tree that I had on here. Photo's, Will's, 1837 saved pages etc all gone along with my full tree (complete with all of my notes). I did back my tree up on disk last year, but I stupidly recorded over it when I needed a disk urgently and couldn't find any spare. Lesson well and truley learn't!!!!! Sue:-) (now trying to rebuild through the tears) |

Zoe, just in case you don't know, you can export your tree from Genes Reunited as a GEDCOM file and put it into your family tree program on your computer. Then copy it onto a floppy disk or whatever so you have a backup. But I guess you had lots of stuff that isn't on the GR tree. I must say I try to write everything down as well as put it on the computer, just in case. But if I can find anything I sent you or that you sent me, I will send it to you again. I'll have a look later on because I've got to go out now though. Hope you manage to retrieve your tree! Kate. |

I oroigionally had my tree on Family Tree Maker ... AND I copied it onto CD as well ( when I got to 300+ names). Now, I update the CD every few months ... so I have a complete tree on Gedcom on CD. Safe as houses. I also have my tree on Tribal Pages ..... BUT, because that site is free, I DO NOT rely on it being there forever !..T P could decide to close down through lack of funds ... as I doubt many people offer 'donations to update'! Always keep an upto date tree on CD. I really do feel for you both Zoe & Maureen ... I do know how painful it is .. I lost all my contents when I got a few virus's come in through the backdoor when I tried to get on Ancestry through the tradesman entrance :-( last year. Not nice. Dancer x |

It made me shiver to read that. Everyone, please put your tree into cyber space on some sort of homepage - Ive got mine on FTM2005 website and now Tribalpages. It would be an absolute blow to lose the lot. |

Hi Maureen, That is a problem, I had not thought about anyone deleting my tree from here I would be in trouble if that happened as I haven't even put my tree back together again. Oh well I hope you find out who is doing it and stop it happening. Zoe :) |

Hi Victor, I think I might enquire about that because I think it was Judy in the States who also suggested that. Sounds like a good idea to me. Thanks again Zoe :) |

Hi Maureen, I do have bits of paperwork flying about all over its just that it took all that time and effort to put in into a program, thus I am rather gutted. It is not that easy I haven't got back to Adam and Eve or anything ! Zoe |

Zoe Have you ever thought about putting a second hard drive in your computer and just copying your information over to it. This is very simple to do and very quick. If you then suffer a fatal error on your main hard drive you will still have the other hard drive intact. Even if you have a fatal error in the backup hard drive you still have the main hardrive with the information on. It is very rare that both will go at the same time. Victor |
