If Ellen was already widowed when she married Stephen then this would normally be indicated on the child's birth cert - i.e. on Buller's birth cert, the mother's name would be something like: ''Ellen Thomas, late XXX, formerly Polin''. If it just says ''Ellen Thomas formerly Polin'' then chances are she was not previously married. If that was the case, then that would imply that Sidney was illegitimate (as he doesn't seem to be Stephen's son). Therefore, he was probably registered as Sidney Polin, and then assumed Stephen's surname when his mother married. Maybe that's why they kept Polin as a middle name, and then did the same for Buller to maintain consistency! Richard

I know it is a weird name, apparently he was named after a General from the Boer War. So I'm very interested to find out why they might have named him after this particular guy. Also are you sure Sidney had Thomas as a surname because on the census image it reads, Stephen Thomas Ellen Thomas Buller Polin Thomas Sidney Polin

Sidney has got the Thomas surname Glen, just like Buller (I have a hard job saying that name???) both have Ellen's maiden name as their middle name. I thought I was onto something regarding a previous marriage for Ellen - Richards?? But it was a lot of supposition so I didn't post it.

Yeah I noticed that Sidney was a stepson and that his surname was just Polin so he must have been Ellen son from another relationship?

Thank you Sam, Yes I have that birth certificate which is how I know Ellen's maiden name. I was confused by the fact that his name is written as Buller Polin Thomas. I was told that his middle name was Joseph because he was known as Joseph (as I'm sure you can appreciate being given the name Buller!!!) I just can't find anything else on the family and its brought me to a stand still.
