I've been searching for this lot (my gg-grandfather) for over three months now. I've only found them in 1851. Joseph Eveson greengrocer, born c1824 in Smithfield, London Eliza Elizabeth Eveson (maiden name Beale) born c1824 in Bath, Somerset One known child Joseph Eveson born 1850 in Christchurch, London. I've got their marriage certificate (1847), the birth certificate from 1850 and the 1851 census and it all ties up. In 1851, Eliza's mother was staying with them to confirm Beale for me, and Eliza even put her name as Eliza E. They stayed at the same address (17 Broadwall, Christchurch), so that the birth certificate and the 1851 census have the same address. They even made sure the enumerator had good handwriting. But that's it. Can I find them in 1861 or 1871 or 1881.....? No. The younger Joseph got married in 1869 and I have him in every census that follows. Even when he was mistranscribed as Dodson. Help! Do you have Joseph Jr's marriage certificate? I would note if the father is deceased. He could have died prior to 1861 and Eliza remarried. Rose |

Thanks - got it now. Reg district would be St Saviour Southwark (can see an 1871 Eveson birth there ....) with a pob like Somerset, Bath - Eliza should be easy to find - but NO. Joseph is prob Holborn or Clerkenwell - Smithfield, but who knows - will keep looking. Where was sonny Jim in 1871 please ? |

Laird, you can find the street on multimap. Look for Coin Street SE1. Two streets up, you'll see BRO., that's Broadwall, or what's left of it. It used to be much longer. Alan |

just really wanted to see how young Joseph's pob was recorded ..... Jo snr is gonna be tough with these sort of mistranscriptions and his vague pob of Smithfield ... (its not even really a Parish, so he could have said anywhere in the sq mile ...) I looked for deaths out of interest in FreeBMD - only 4 Evesons in Greater London 1850-1871 - guess you know that by heart after 3 months lol. Gotta feed the dogs - back l8r. |

well, been quite systematic about it and altho obviously havent tried every combo ...... it has to be another of the Dodson ilk mistrans' I guess. I searched the 1871 for Jos* b1824 +/- 5 years, no pob, in London, in Middlesex and finally any county - with (all vowels)VE / UE / WE / YE then the other way around - and a few others thrown in. If they are missing in all 3 census - thats unusual ..... dunno, emigrated ? Real shame that Eliza didnt show with age and pob ..... hey ho- I'll sleep on it. Good one ! |

Thanks to everyone who is helping me here :o) I have thought about looking to see if they emigrated. It's just that every time I look for someone to see if they've emigrated, it turns out that they haven't! One or both of them could have died. I've looked for that too, but not found anything conclusive. For anyone new joining the thread, we still haven't found this family in 1861/71/81/91.... Alan |

Yes, but a while back and I probably wasn't looking for a remarriage, so I'll go through 1871 again. If anyone could check Broadwall in 1861 looking for Joseph Evesons and Eliza Elizabeth Evesons (maybe remarried but still with young Joseph?) that would be fantastic! Alan |

Just went through Broadwall in 1871 looking for them. Nothing :o( I'll start on the other streets in the area. The two neighbouring districts (4 and 6)are pretty clear, but I've found one (3) with atrocious handwriting, so I'll check that next! Alan |
