Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me trace my ggg grandfather William Gray born in Seaton Ross, Yorkshire England in 1819. I am new to GR and do not know where or how to get this type of info. He then married a girl called Caroline (Imeson?) possibly around Q3 1842. She was from Leeds and her mother was Jane. They lived in Carr St, Leeds according to the 1861 census. William was a cloth finisher. Would anyone out there know where I could find the local mill? I would be very grateful for any direction on these queries.
Many thanks,
Pauline

most of the mills have been pulled down or turned into flats. and there would have been dozens of mills .unless you know the mills name it would be difficult.

There is this marriage in the 3rd qtr, of 1843 in Leeds, but the Caroline on the same page is called Caroline Spencer:-

Name: William Gray
Year of Registration: 1842
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Leeds (1837-1929)
County: Yorkshire - West Riding

You would need to get one of the children's birth certificates to verify the mother's maiden name.

It looks like the marriage I found was the right one, since the son on the 1881 census has Spencer for his middle name.

wonder if her mom was married twice. if the spencer marriage is right, as 1861 has a jane imeson as what looks like wifes mother

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 12 Oct 2007 21:11

It could be either:-

1. Caroline who was married twice,

2. Caroline's mother was married twice,

3. Caroline was illegitimate and Spencer was her mother's maiden name and her mother married a Mr. Imeson after Caroline's birth.

Any of the above could account for the difference in names.

hmm always pays to think laterally....

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 12 Oct 2007 21:21

I think the best thing would be to get the birth certificate for Ada as Jen suggested. Even if Caroline was married twice, her maiden name would be on the child's birth certificate.

Personally I think Spencer will be the maiden name for Caroline as you would hardly give your son by your second marriage the surname of your first husband as his middle name, would you???

I'd still get the cert to prove this but it gives you something to be looking at whilst waiting for it.

Hi Jen, Kathleen and Andy,
I am so thrilled at finding a speedy response to my query. Do you guys ever get any sleep? Ha! Thank you so so much for all the information. No doubt it will be extremely useful. I will take your advice and apply for a birth certificate. Now I'm not asking any of you to do this for me but can you tell me how do I do this as I live in Northern Ireland? Is there a specific GRO I should write to or can it be done on-line?
Again, many thanks to one and all for the help. I wish you all the best of luck in your own research.

You can apply for certificates online at this address:-

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

The certificates will cost you £7 if you have the GRO reference numbers (which is what you've been given in earlier replies).

Make sure that when the online form asks "Is the full GRO reference known?" that you tick the "yes" box. If you leave it on "no" they will charge you more.

Hi Kathleen,
Thank you so much for the help and tips. You are a gem. I am really grateful. If there is any way I can return the favour just ask. I will give the certificate a go. This is so addictive isn't it? What about you, have you got far in your quest?
Best wishes,
Pauline

KathleenBell Report 13 Oct 2007 19:39

Hi Pauline,

You are more than welcome.

To be honest I'm not really doing any of my own family history just now. I started nearly 5 years ago just before my mother died, and I only really wanted to find out a couple of things.

1. Anything about my maternal grandmother with just a name and possible place of birth.

2. What happened to my paternal grandfather who left his wife and kids in the 1920's never to be seen again and just the vague mention from the family of Hastings.

I found lots of information about the rest of the family history (back to the late 1700's on my maiden name line) but it took me until last year to find out about my grandfather (thanks to Mr. Bristow of Hastings Library, to whom I'll always be indebted). Thanks also to a very elderly distant relative someone put me in touch with who gave me my grandmother's exact place of birth which made it possible for me to find her in the census, and then the rest of her family.

Once I'd found these two bits of information I felt as though I didn't need to go any further, although I must admit I became very addicted (especially to Genes) and I'm sure you will too.

Good luck,

Kath. x

Hi Kathleen,
I admire your patience and skill in your search. You are very lucky to have got back so far. I agree, the 1700's is plenty for anyone. Well done girl!

Can I ask one more thing? In all the info yourself and Jen quote, where do you get this info from? Jen has said there's a photo but I don't know where to look as there's no hyper link. I'm sure that you have plenty to keep you occupied so sorry for chipping away.
Regards,
Pauline

I'm not absolutely sure what Jen means about looking at the picture.

If you click on her name on her reply you can send her a personal message and ask her. It probably has something to do with whichever site she uses for her research.

Personally I would recommend a subscription to Ancestry as I couldn't have managed without it myself and it's what I use most for look-ups for other people. It sounds expensive at first but it works out at less than £1.50p per week and well worth it for the information it has, and for that you can use it 24 hours a day, every day of the year (and at first I was on almost that long, lol).
